| Discipline and Doody Freya has only gone out a few times. And I found a flea on her the last time so I'm waiting until get goes to the vet--first appointment next Wednesday--and get her on a preventative before I take her back out. So she uses a pad that her previous owner had her using. But she still has accidents off it. I stepped in one such accident yesterday LOL. Anyway, my cousin says I should "rub her nose in it." I said no. I don't think that's a good idea. We had a small exchange. "Then all I can say is allow your dog to rule you and not the other way around! No I'm not for beating my child! But I am for teaching them discipline and their is a difference! You are the adult not the dog! If you don't train it, then that dog will run all over you and you will just continue to clean up after her! It's not about how much memory they have, it's about consistency. That's how they learn. Doing the same thing over and over until they get it." "It doesn't matter that you don't catch her in the act. The pee puddle or poop pile has her scent, she will know that smell, even if you don't rub her nose in it, you still need to hold her next to it so she can see it and tell her that's a no no" |

| Hi there, Freya is lucky you are her papa. Teaching a pup discipline is about consistency, but it is not about foul punishment. Your cousin is wrong. From a PetMD article (emphasis added), "Do not punish your new puppy or engage in extreme punishments like rubbing the nose of the puppy into his mess or spanking the puppy. These kinds of punishments are simply acts of cruelty; they are not the right way to raise a puppy. Your new puppy will grow up fearing and mistrusting you." If your cousin has an open mind, please share the article with him/her. Another article on HealthyPets is even more detailed. In the opening, a Dr. Becker writes, "A significant percentage of dogs wind up in animal shelters due to housetraining problems, and about a quarter of behavior-related visits to veterinarians also involve housetraining issues." Further down, in "Housetraining ground rule No. 4," author writes, "Don't punish your dog for mistakes. No shouting, absolutely no physical contact and never rub your dog's nose in his mess. For many people, this can be the most difficult rule to follow, but I can't stress enough how important it is." Hope these article help. Keep up the good instincts. --KatysMom |

I'll check them out! This usually happens when I'm chatting with Krystle and I mention an accident. But usually I never catch Freya doing it, so I can't really do anything, even positive reinforcement. Krystle thinks it doesn't matter. It does! Baby isn't going to know what she did wrong! And she's sensitive and kinda timid, even still after six months. She's come out of her shell a LOT...but still... I think she mentioned also a newspaper on the nose. Geesh. Matese said it sounded like something from the 40s lol. My family is pretty conservative, even when it comes to dogs. I don't know, because it's more backwards thinking than conservative.

| Hi again, Lil Dutch is still in her x-pen when I'm unable to dedicate my watchful eye. If your goal is to raise a confident, well-behaved fur-family-member, then foul punishment isn't the way forward. It is a choice and good for you. --KatysMom. |

| Sticking a dogs nose in it's mess comes from my grandfather's days, that's how they trained puppies not to poop in the house, this method was the only way they knew how to train puppies in house breaking, this goes back to the 1940's, that's where your cousin is coming from, "the old days". Read the articles KatysMom gave you. Your cousin will never change her mind on how to potty train a dog. It is obvious dogs to her are just dogs. You will find ppl are not understanding and comments like "it's just a dog" is a phrase you will hear often. You will learn who not to vent to lol, that's why there is a YT, a community that is eager to help members with issues they have had and what worked for them. I have had Poodles and mini Schnauzers which I loved dearly, but yorkies are a very special breed, they are very childlike, having a yorkie is like having a toddler for life. Only a yorkie owner would understand. Do not listen to what ever your cousin tells you about raising dogs if she tells you to stick her nose in the poop. And never swat with a newspaper, another 1940 punishment.

| Absolutely do not rub her nose in it that can actually burn her nose. If you catch her doing it you tell her a firm no. If you don’t catch her doing it you can’t really do much. In order to tell her where to go you can try soaking up some pee with the pad or putting her poo on it to show her. When she goes where you want give her a treat and lots of praise. Until she is potty trained she should have a limited area when you can’t completely watch her. I’m glad she will be going to the vet soon.

Totally! Each breed has their own things. I know that. I try to tell my family this. A question. Another thing has arisen: my mom and even my therapist says don't use conditioner. But Yorkies have human-like hair, right?

| I was clear to her: I WILL NOT DO THAT TO MY DOG. I don't think she liked it. Funny thing: I'm 45 and she's like 30 or something. I'm the more open to finding out ideas, etc. |

| If you are keeping her in a longer coat then conditioner is a must. Make sure you are using dog shampoo and conditioner because their ph is different then ours so human products are not good for them.

| I never done the rubbing nose in poop thing... I feel bad for them to have poop in their nose that they can't clean out For me I just have my puppy glued to me 24/7, I am never far from her, if she sneaks a pee behind my back it's my fault not hers lol. I just scold myself. Frankly I find the whole clapping to get her attention then taking her to the pad helps a lot. There's literally no point in yelling at her 5 minutes after the fact. |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I am going to take a real simplistic approach if you get a puppy be prepared for accidents, if you are re homing an older dog ditto. Bio break routines are a god send. You can also try Leashing doggie around your waist so he or she must stay close to you and you have a better chance to intervene. Limit free run time to supervised run time in home.

| I don't know about other people, but putting my puppy next to her urine puddle (not in it, just next to it)...point with finger and say "NO" then eventually she will get the point. Obviously it can't be an hour after finding out, maybe seconds or minutes after she will understand. My 14 weeks puppy gets totally guilty when she has an accident in the house, she will walk with head down to her crate and whine a crap ton....thats how i know she has an accident. Ever since i figured out that she feels really guilty after peeing in the house, i no longer have to tell her NO...i just ignore it and clean up the mess. She has gone 2 weeks without any accidents (fingers crossed of course) |

| Where did you palace the puppy pads? Dogs do not love to do their business in the place they sleep. My Yorkie can go potty on the pads in the bathroom when I leave home as well as in the yard. Peeing inside or outside need different training, which should be started from the puppyhood. Yorkies are very smart and good at learning, you share two different potty training methods in the links: 1. Potty training outside 2. Indoor pee-pad training Hope these could help you! |
