Potty Time Troubles We welcomed a new Shih Tzu pup 2 weeks ago and he is on a great start with potty training. He is already ringing the bell to go out and potty. The problem comes in with Lexi. I had to stop taking them out to go potty at the same time because one or both of them will try and start playing with the other. I got frustrated with trying to stop them so now I just take them out separate, but that is frustrating because I am having to constantly take one of them out. I would like to be able to take them out at the same time. Plus it doesn't help that Lexi has been having some listening issues lately. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. |
Just wondering why you are concerned that they are playing with each other? Is it because you want to train for specific potty now breaks and the puppy gets distracted by playing? |

Yes, for potty training purposes I like to keep the front yard for potty time only. Parker is already started with hitting the bell just to go outside and play and I don't want him to be distracted and think it's play time. I use the back yard for playing. Especially if I am trying to do something inside, I want them to be able to go out, potty, and get back in quickly. I know it will take some time just like any training, but it's just frustrating at times. Now that Parker is pretty consistent with hitting the bell to go outside and potty, I am ready to work on this problem so I'm not having to take them out separately. |
Do you take them to potty on a leash? We have the same problem with Winnie....she goes out to potty and plays...I started putting her on a leash and within a few days she goes potty within 5 minutes. |

Yes, I take them on a leash, but they end up getting tangled up when they try to play. Parker is doing awesome. He is very much food motivated and loves his kibble so I use that as a treat. I was giving him a treat for going potty, but he would go right away when outside so he caught on very quickly to go potty outside. So I stopped giving him a treat for going potty and instead gave him a treat for ringing the bell. He hasn't had an accident since I started doing that and he's only 11 weeks old! Hopefully with time, I will be able to take them out together with no problems. |
