Potty training adult dog
 

Ok, so with my recent scare of Annie's bee sting, plus the hawks and owls in our yard, DH is really pushing for Annie to be indoor trained. I agree. It was so nice with our other yorkie being indoor trained, and it was just so wonderful to not have to worry about predators, bad weather, etc.

I asked our vet how to go about training her, and to my surprise, he really couldn't give me any advice.

Is it possible to break Annie of going outside and train her to go inside? If so, how would I go about it?

I would think so, are you going to use pee pads? They have throw away and washable ones. I would just buy a pad stick it where you want it to go and then start putting her on her pad telling her to potty and reward her when she does… Since she is use to going outside, you can put the pad next to the door…

Dh bought Peanut a dog run and attached it to the house. It even has a top on it. Like you we have bees, wasps, hawks, owls, coyotes, snakes.. so he is never outside without one of us. However he loves to sun bath. So the dog run is perfect. He can go outside to potty and sunbath all he wants. He is 100 percent protected. However it does have a top on it, but its chain link, it has been so hot here, the cement will burn your feet. I've noticed he hasn't been wanting to go out of his doggy door so I put a pad next to it. He has been using his pad and only going outside when the ground is cool!!

Thank you!! I love the idea of an outdoor run, but we are not allowed to have those in our neighborhood.

I gated off a portion of our kitchen with wee wee pads, and followed her outdoor potty schedule. I would pick her up and put her in the gated area and tell her to go potty. Did this for about a week, took down the gate, to see if she would go there while being gated in the entire kitchen. She went on the floor, so I gated off the section again. For the past four days, she has gone on the wee wee pads. It may take a while, and I'm trying so hard to leave her in there until she goes, but if she doesn't go after 30 minutes, I take her out of the area, and then bring her back later. With her being an older dog, she can hold it all night long, but I follow the "puppy" schedule during the day anyway.

Our family room is on our second floor, and I let Annie follow me to the kitchen where I pick her up and put her in her gated potty area. Is this the correct thing to do? Or, am I supposed to take down the gates, put her on her leash, and take her to the area and make her go potty while on the leash? This may be more difficult to do as she prefers to be alone to potty.

Would welcome any suggestions/advice.
