Cat obsessed Yorkie Hi all I have just given two rescue yorkshire terriers both females a home...One of the them is a hyper dog...I also have two young cats...the hyper yorkie is obsessed with the cats...chasing them and even trying to attack them...one of my cats is terrified....I want them all to get on as best they can...can anyone give me some advice as to what to do...I was thinking of maybe bringing the dog for some training classes or maybe trying to train her myself... any advice would be greatly appreciated |
How big are the cats? Did they have a proper introduction? Were the cats there first? |
Hi Leoscara The cats were here first....one cat is quite a small cat....when I tried to introduce them to each other I should have done it differently probably ...we were outside and the dogs just went crazy barking and trying to get off the leash...I wasn't expecting that reaction because I have another dog and when I brought the cats home to live with us that dog reacted quite differently and just accepted them into the family..I only have the dogs since last Thursday and I am more than happy to put in the time and effort to train the dogs but just don't know how to do it!! |
They just have to get used to the fact the cats are part of the family and they will. I have 5 cats and 2 yorkies and they live together well. Jewels will put them in there place every now and then though. Mine will still chase a neighbor cat that comes in the yard but they dont chase ours |
Thanks chachi....feeling more positive now...my hubby did say that they would get used to each other but was feeling doubtful...not any more :-) |

Not to be a downer, but my dads JRT mix is not able to peacefully co exist with the cats. The cats live upstairs and the dogs live downstairs. We have a gate at the top of the steps. The cats come down during the night when the dogs are locked in bedroom, and sometimes during the day, but they can quickly get away. Lilly, the JRT, will full on attack, and bark, it's an all out WAR. I believe she would hurt them if given the chance. They are quicker than her though. Jackson is okay... but I'd never want to live with cats & him. He has the ability to be calm around them, especially if I have food his focus is on the food, but it's his instinct to chase them when they run. I don't think he would ever hurt them tho. He's also been known to sleep near them during the night etc. But it can be a task sometimes. At night by himself he is the best with them... when all 3 dogs are around, they egg each other on. Whenever there is a "meow" heard, all 3 dogs go running and barking to the top of the steps. It's quite annoying and hasn't gotten any better in 3 years lol. Some terriers cannot peacefully co-exist with cats. |
I had cats before I got my yorkies. My cats were still young and in the beginning, Couver got along great with them. He would even wrestle and play with them. My female absolutely adores the cats and will kiss them like crazy every time she sees them. She even does this on command now :p Couver, however has decided that he is the dominant one in the family and started chasing the cats about a year ago. The cats are pretty quick, but he has come back with mouthfuls of cat hair a few times. I always discipline him for it, but it hasn't really stopped. He can be in the same room with them, but all of a sudden he will run full force toward them and chase them away. I'm hoping we can correct this, but for now I just put him in a room by himself after he does it and hopefully he will figure out that it's not an acceptable behavior. |
