Ha! My baby can "sit"!

My 13 wk old baby can "sit"! Took about a week and a half worth of dilegent training, but she can go it! So I thinknI will try the sit, stay command next. This should be interesting <insertsarcasmhere>! lol!

Awe so cute!!! How did you teach her to sit? The easiest way is to put the treat like up right above the bridge of their snout. It forces them to sit cause they want to see it. That's how I did it with Geno. Look online or in books about the different ways you can teach these tricks. It can be a lot easier. At least it was for me when teaching Geno how to lay down. You put the treat out in front of them and slowly lower it down in front of them and then trail it off like you are basically drawing out an "L". It really does get them to lay down and after repetition, they will catch on. It took me about an hour to teach Geno to lay down. He actually lays down now instead of sitting when I go to give him a treat lol Either way is mannerly to me so I don't mind.

Oh our trainer did tell us that the stay command can be hard to teach a young puppy so she usually waits until they get a little older. No idea if this is true but I know trying to teach Geno to stay when he was that age was really rough, but that's cause he's a hyper little guy. Probably depends on the temperment of the dog too at that age. Good luck! :) She sounds like a really smart puppy though so hopefully you don't have any trouble!

Every time she came when i called her, i shake the Bil- Jac treat bag..thats how I get her to come to me....its the only way some times...when I gave her the treat I did put it up to her snout and this made her back up a bit, but I did gently push her rump down too and said the word sit....everytime....
I will hold off on the stay command and maybe not do it everytime, but introduce her to it, occassionally....maybe the whole "paw" command, is next. lol! Or lay down....thats a good one too!

Teaching stay to a young one can be tough because puppies just don't have a lot of self control at that age - think toddler. It is still a good time to start though. Just don't expect greatness!! Start with a very, very short period of time - 1 or 2 seconds. As they start to get what you are wanting, vary the time so that they don't anticipate a certain amount of time. After they get it pretty good, you can start to add small distractions - like wiggling your hand or later foot. Don't add more than one thing at a time though. In other words, don't add to the duration and also add a distraction at the same time. Eventually you can start to move a foot like you are going to walk away. Very, very slowly work on this one. You want to set the pup up for success. Learn to read them and if you see the signs that they are about to move - praise and reward - before they get the chance to break the stay. There are three components to a good stay - duration, distraction, and distance. The more you add of each the harder it is. In our classes we take two seven week sessions to fully incorporate all three. One more tip - we always start our loose leash walking with our left foot. The dog learns to read your body language. If you begin walking when you want your dog to come with you with lead your left foot - always begin walking when you want your dog to stay with your right foot. It sounds simple but it's much less confusing for your dog.

Sorry for the book!!

Hmm I'd say 15-16 weeks. The only way to keep his attention are treats so it worked out haha The "paw" and "high five" commands came after lay down. Those weren't too hard to teach. For "paw" i just put the treat in my fist and put it out in front of him and said "shake". Then when he put his paw out, I grabbed it and would praise him. The high five was easy cause he practially already does that when I put the treat up high anyways lol After a week or two of doing these tricks, he started doing them without the treats in my hands so now I just go grab and treat after he does it. :) These doggies are such fast learners!

ZoE learned sit, stay, down, here, up, shake, and high five with a week.

Then she learned "speak" in a day (and that is the one I kick myself on cos when I first tried it she would crawl backwards, and I wish I'd reinforced that behavior and tried speak later...oh well...)

Roll over, however, we've been trying for over 6 months and its still not happening. I've even tried using chicken instead of the kibble I used for all the other training, as extra incentive....but she's still not going for it.

Are you trying it on a soft surface? That and "bang" (play dead) Sadie will only do on carpet or some kind of pad. She is so funny - if it's a hard surface she will throw her head over to tell me she knows what she's supposed to do but she won't roll over on her back on a hard surface.

Over achiever! Lolol! A week, huh? How old was she?with the whole sit thing, we didnt do sessions, I just did it whenever she deserved a treat for doing something that I wanted her to do.
I always heard that the sessions shouldnt last bery long due to their attentions spans.

We just did each about 5 times in a row (5 pieces of kibble), usually 3-4 times a day.

She's a smart cookie and picks things up much quicker than any dog I've had before...infact sometimes I feel bad cos I feel like she's not being challenged enough. I'm thinking about building an agility course in the yard this spring. We tried one out at a dog festival at of the summer and ZoE loved it.

Yay!! That sounds very cool!! Gotta keep them stimulated of they will cause trouble!! LOL!!
