How do you train your furbutts to use doggie stairs? I just bought some doggie stairs to use in the bedroom. I've tried coaxing them up the stairs with treats but they refuse to get on the steps. Toby still wants to try and jump up on the bed himself (but it's too high). Usually food will coax Toby and Speedy to do whatever I ask. Is there an easier way to teach them? These two are SOOOOOOO set in their ways. Thanks! |
It's been a while since the very first pup arrived. As I remember it took some bribing with treats to get her to use them but the 3 others that were added to the family, one at a time, taught each other. My bed is much too high for them to jump on or off of so if they wanted to be near me when I was on my bed they had to use the stairs. My last puppy who is now 1 and 1/2 years was taught at the breeders house before he even came home to me. They always use the stairs to get up or down even though the king Charles could jump down if she wanted to. It's been great especially when I added a new pup to know that he wouldn't try and jump off the bed in the middle of the night. Wrong or right they have all always slept on my bed and I have felt comfortable that they wouldn't jump off. |
Thanks for the info. Tonight my husband tried coaxing them up the stairs with treats (fritos no less!) and at least he had a bit of success. At least they both got their feet on the first step. He is giving them a break and going to try again in a while. Maybe we can eventually get them to go up the steps but knowing these two, they won't go down them! I'll just have to keep trying............. |
We were thinking of getting some but Knox won't even attempt them at the store so I haven't got any yet :/ I think I might get some anyways and try your tricks ;) |
My husband thinks what is making them so hesitant is that they are so narrow (and plastic). These two are used to either carpeted steps going to the basement (and they are wider) or concrete steps. I'll give it a few more days and if they don't work maybe I will have to BEG hubby to make some that are a bit wider (after all, he is a carpenter.) And it will save me $42! |
I used a carpeted ramp that had a high side to it, and still I had to coax my little ones with food. Kiwi, my baby who savored every bite when she ate, still was very hesitant because she was afraid. I kept holding her under her belly and almost carried her up and down the ramp several times until she was less afraid to do it on her own. I am sure your husband could make stairs or a ramp that is much safer and that your baby will be much more likely to use. |
I use a scamp ramp by my bed and as each new baby came home I spent time having them go up and down the ramp using treats. They all took to it right away, even Nikki who was 15 and use to jumping up and down off of furniture. They just follow the rest. I also have stairs my husband made years ago that are real wide and carpeted. Originally I bought some stairs and they were to narrow and Cali was afraid to use them. So maybe wider stairs or a ramp would work better. |
Treats, treats, and treats- I put a treat on every stair and gave him positive reinforcement and then he got the hang of it :) I LOVE my stairs from bed bath and beyond!!! Keoki loves them because they have sides- I tried others but he was scared. They are inexpensive and fold up- I have a few of them :) I highly recommend them |
I agree..............they need wider stairs and they need to be carpeted. So I'm taking these plastic ones back to PetSmart tomorrow. Petco's website had some that didn't look too bad so I will stop by their store on the way home tomorrow night. If I don't find what I want, it will be time to sweet talk hubby into making some. I think if they were wider and had carpet on them, we would have been able to coax them up the stairs with no problem. |

My bf made me ramps for my guys, I prefer ramps over stairs. I just brought 2 year old Jesse home in August and he wasn't use to ramps, I held on to him and walked him up and down the ramps a few times, and in no time he was using them on his own! :) |
