Question about potty training Hi guys! Biggie likes to walk while he poos...I mean, he'll be in that squatting position, but he'll use his front legs to literally pick himself up and walk a little until I guess he gets comfortable and then goes...the thing is, is that he'll try to go on the pee pad, but then he'll end up missing it because he's scooting away from the pad! If I pick him up and place him down on the pad he won't go anymore, so I don't really want to interrupt him if he really needs to go, but I also don't want him to be missing his pad! So I guess my question is, do all puppies do this and do they eventually grow out of it? Or do you think I should correct him and place him back on the pad even though it makes him not want to poop anymore? Another thing is, he'll actually pick up his poop sometimes and take it elsewhere so that he can eat it! I usually pick it up right away, but sometimes when I'm not watching as closely he'll get away with it. Anything I should feed him to get his poop to taste nasty to him? haha thanks guys! |
How old is Biggie? As I have seen, each dog has a different potty ritual. Some sniff long and hard before choosing a spot to finally go. My boy sniffs, does a 1080 degree spin before finally going. :rolleyes: Would you consider placing a second pad? That way he has a bigger target, and with tons of praise he'll understand that the pad is the only place for him to handle his business. The eating the poop thing could be a start of a bad habit, or a sign of poor diet. What food are you feeding him? Grocery store type foods are the dog equivalent of human junk food. Sure it tastes good but it has no or little nutritional value. Some poor quality dog foods smell and look the same going in and they do going out. Some dogs eat poo in an effort to gain more nutrients. |
He's 3.5 mo old haha. Well the people I got him from fed him Beneful but I'm trying to wean him away from that and onto Life's Abundance. |

I would suggest picking him up and putting him on the pad. If he's got to go bad enough he'll go on the pad and when you put him there I would say a word associated with going to the bathroom that you want him to learn and then keep him there until he goes, if possible. When training Winnie, if we caught her in the act we would say "no" and pick her up and put her outside until she finished and if she didn't go to the bathroom outside then she went in her kennel. I'm not an expert but I agree with the above, it will be a bad habit if you don't correct it now. As for eating poo, I have not experienced that. EWWW. Good luck! |
