| Potty Training Successes I ave been reading all the entries about problems with potty training -- and have to admit it is a little overwhelming..... just hearing of all the problems I wonder is it possible to accomplish? I would love to hear of those who have had success. A simple "did it!" will do..... looking for hope that it can be done! Thank you --- |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | First off welcome to YT. Umm it's possible it just takes some time and patience. I am at the 99% mark with my two at this point. Toby is a year and two months and Zoey is a year and nine months. There is hope..just don't give up.

| It takes at least a year, be patient. My males fly through 2 sets of doggy doors to get outside. When I first got them @ 10 & 11 weeks, I honestly thought the day would never come, but it did!

| Yes, itīs possible! The first day I got Lady Coco (the tiny little thing was 1 month and a half), I put her in the bed room, and when I came back after a while to check her in, she had climbed the bed and pooped all over the sheets. She is almost five months and it's been a long road but finally she knows that the right place to do her business is in the litter box or outside. Sometimes I have seen poop on the floor of the bathroom or in her bed... but I'm almost sure that this is because she grabs the poop with her teeth, doesn't like the taste so much (she used to eat IT all the time when she was little) and just leave it... I have to "catch" her on action... But most of the time, I take her outside and with command she does it!!! Isn't it great??? The trainer said that I had to be persistent and she is so right!!! The kennel is the best thing in the world to train a puppy. yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh!!! |

| I'd say Jackson is between 97%-98% potty trained right now, depending on the day. He is currently 8 months old.

| Your puppy is only 7 weeks old. He should still be with his mom until 12 weeks. Your breeder or petstore is a Greeder. Please have patients with this little baby. |

| Hi there and Welcome to YT! I have a 9 month old and she is 99% trained. She has a rare accident and when she does, it's usually a human's fault as they didn't attend to the "I need to go outside" bark. Consistency and patience. Good luck!

| You must be patient and watch your baby with a hawk eye! Uni got it within a few months, only b/c I am with her 24/7 and take her to work with me everyday. ( I own my own business) First I would put her in the tub, where she couldn't jump out. I would stay with her till she went, sometimes this meant 30 mins or more! I did this every three hours or so. That also meant when I heard her stirring around during the night (she wears a bell) I would get up and take her to the tub, even at 3 in the morning. Each time she went i would say "good pee pee" and make a big fuss and pet her. Then we upgraded to a pee pad in a pan, and she already knew what "go pee pee" meant. She knew our schedule and before we went to work and once we came home she would be kept in the laundry/bathroom area until she went and wouldn't be let out until she did. (The key is to have a schedule for your baby to learn, and stick with it. Also, do not cave in! Do not let them have free reign of the house until they have gone!) She also had another pee pad/pan in the upstairs master bedroom, and guest bathroom. funny thing was, once she "got it", we would come home, she would pee down stairs, then run upstairs and go poop! Meanwhile, we would go to MIL's house on the weekends. She also knew downstairs was for peeing, and upstairs was to pooping. *We did not train her to do this. It is just a personal trait of hers!* Uni is my first dog, and yorkies are notoriously hard to train, but I felt it was easy b/c I had nothing to compare to! They really are like children, you cannot take your eyes off them when they are that young. You will lose sleep, but it is worth it! Good luck!

| Just read all the advice on YT here... it'll take forever to get through all the potty posts and sort all the replies, but it's worth it. And know that that even though it's not easy, it is DEFINITELY possible. I got Nikko when he was 3 months old, and by the time he was 5 months old he had stopped having accidents altogether (even though we still watched him like a hawk till he was 6mo old, cause you can't trust them totally until they've gone minimum 30 days without an accident). He's somewhere around about 10 months old now, and when he's at home he ONLY pees outside, no accidents, ever. We're also very good about letting him out fairly frequently. We crate trained, and drove ourselves literally insane watching him constantly in the beginning. It only took two months for us to potty train Nikko completely, and he actually was super sick and not really in control of his BMs for the first month. But believe you me, those two monts felt like two years. Like I said though, if you have the research done and the dedication and ability to be somewhat consistent, there's no reason potty training won't work for you two. Just be patient, and try to keep from pulling all your hair out or going grey before you get there. Lauren & Nikko PS: Did it! You will too. |

| Chewie is 10 weeks old. I've had him for a week and he peed twice in the house. It was my own fault really, I knew he had to go but wanted to finish what I was doing. He sleeps his night fine. I write the time when he does his stuff and I know he roughly has to go out every hour for pee and 4 hours for poo unless he is sleeping. When he wakes I take him out and write the new time down. I am lucky to be at home with him all the time or almost. I leave the patio door open all day and he has started to go near the door when he needs to go already I make him walk outside so he knows the way for his business. I have 3 steps to get down on the grass so I made a ramp with an old blanket on top so he wouldn't slip. He has access to his food and water all day until 6 pm. After that I only leave water out. Around 7 I take him in my bed and he plays with Daddy my toy poodle while I watch tv. I take him out every hour. About half an hour before bedtime I got outside with him one last time and I put his crate in the bed. I have an old t-shirt of mine that I didn't wash and put in his crate so he still smells me. He goes in and comes out to see if he's prisonner lol. Eventually he falls asleep in the crate and I quietly close the door. By then, he doesn't fuss to get out because he is tired from playing. In the morning I take him out asap because he has a major jobs to do lol Now that he knows his crate I can go out for an hour or so with him in his crate. He wakes around 7am and I know he'll take a nap around 9 and 11. It's when I know he won't fuss because I'm gone. So far so good |

| Both of mine are trained to go outside. Loki is 4 and Sammy is 3. Loki was trained by 10 months, but he also had medical issues that made him have to pee every 20 minutes. (If he didn't have that he would have been trained sooner, he'll do anything for a cookie) He is now on medication that makes it more like every 45 minutes He has not pooped in the house since he was like 5 months old. He rarely if EVER pees on the floor. Like maybe every 6 months. If he does, it's by the door and it's because he drank too much and no one let him out (water goes right through him) It's always our fault and always just an accident. He was neutered at 6 months, doesn't lift, and he marks outside but NEVER inside. Sammy was 10 months old when we got her, not house trained, and we got her trained in about 6 months. She still poops on the floor like twice a month if she has to go and no one lets her out (Loki on the other hand will throw a barking, whining FIT in front of the door before even considering pooping on the floor.) We just go out with her and MAKE SURE she goes twice a day. Our "problem times" are first thing in the morning (she does not re-enter the house without pooping outside) and we keep our door closed at night since if she does go, she does it downstairs. If it's been a few hours after dinner and she has not gone, she is not allowed on a different level of the house than one of us. If no one is upstairs she is not allowed upstairs alone until she goes. It really just takes a lot of communication between us. We just keep each other informed of the poop-status each day LOL We never used pads, and I say the key to our success was crate training and taking them outside on LEASHES so we were there to reward them immediately when they went. WALKS were crucial when we were in a hurry and needed them to go quickly before we left the house - They always poop on walks and pee no less than 6 times They were also taken out on a schedule. With Loki I had to set a timer, literally. Sam was easier because she only had to pee 1/2 as often as Loki, so as long as she went out every time he did, she was empty most of the time. Now they are trained to ring a bell when they need to go out so we are no longer on a schedule and just do on-demand potty breaks I only make them go out if I'm leaving the house or before bed. Oh and you have to WATCH them go. Going out with them, or in my case mostly standing in the door holding the leash, cuts down on the fooling around outside. They know the difference between a potty break and a walk. Walks are for sniffing and marking and chasing bugs. Potty breaks are outside.grass.pee.inside.treat They were crated when we couldn't monitor them, like when showering or cooking dinner or when we were not home. They used to have free roam of the house when we were not home, but we put in a wood floor that would be completely ruined if one of them did have an accident while we were gone and could not clean it right away, so they are either left in the bedroom to sleep or in their crate, together, which is huge (like if crates come in 5 sizes, it's size 4) and has big fluffy pillows and their favorite blanket in there. Loki loves the crate and immediately plops himself in the back (his fav spot) to take a nap. Sammy screams and fights to get out the whole time you are home, but shuts up the minute we leave the house so we know it's all an act and not separation anxiety. She is not scared of the crate, since it is one of her favorite places to take a nap during the day - as long you don't close it! She just prefers to be with us so if at all possible they go with us in the car. So anyway, it was a full time job but it's so much easier to live with them now And yes, we live near Chicago so they go outside in wind, rain, snow, ice, etc. The worst is the rain because they don't like the wet grass. Snow is no big deal. Wind is bad. They will go out in any weather as long as I encourage them. They are out there for 30 seconds tops in bad weather. I think we only had like 2 days last winter where I had to put coats and boots on them. Otherwise they run out in their t-shirts or hoodies and they are fine Last edited by Erin; 06-24-2009 at 07:26 AM. |

Yorkie Yakker | Lost the plot Ahhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh if only I had of read this 48 hours ago 3 days ago we decided that we did want DOLCE ( now 5 months old ... we've had him for 2) pooing on newspaper....soooOOoooo we got him a litter tray with some gravel in it. We placed him in it thinking that at any second we were gonna get a result....5 minutes turned into 20 which turned into 40 which turned into an hour. We constantly said positive things to him. And we even showed him what sorta treat he was gonna get when he produced THE GOODS.......bUt nothing....he started looking sleepy and wobbly to the point he just had to lay down. After removing him he did what we thought he would do and presented us with a gift....only thing was it was smack in the middle of the living room. About 40 minutes after his next meal we tried agian and nothing.....he started his little cry sounds and would stand on 3 legs....sit or look as if he would fall asleep. We removed his again and of course the same result...poo on the floor again. We were ready to pull our hair out ..... and we were slowly getting closer to LOSİNG THE PLOT.......I felt my blood pressure drop or rise..I'm not sure which...but it wasn't a good feeling. Today after our potty drama he has refused to eat or drink ..... he sees potty training as a punishment.......we are always ready with the special treat once he poo poos. Right now He is just stands there...it's now 7pm and he has not eaten or drunk anything except licked some water from my finger. So he is standing in the tray and doing his whinning thing (which by the way sounds so cute) .... now do we have him there again for 30...40 minutes and then have him ignore us...not eat or drink? WE are close to LOSİNG THE PLOT......and I only have so much hair left after these past days. What do we do ? DOLCE'S DADS

YT Addict | Lexi is 99% potty trained, she knows better but occationally lets one slip. She gets sooooo embarrassed too. She's been potty trained to go outside since she was 6 months old. For us, it was consistancy. If she went inside, I'd raise and deepen voice to scold her. I'd then pick her up, give her a light spank on the butt (nothing that would hurt her) and put her outside. During working hours, I would kennel her. I'd either come home for lunch or my roommate would let her out for a mid-day pee. We slowly increased the amount of time she was in the kennel. Also if she barked by the door I would praise and let her outside. This backfired when she realized she could go outside whenever she wanted. She was constantly barking to go in and out - in and out. Eventually she got sick of that game and now only barks by the door if she needs to go.

| my pooch jerry is only about 4 months old. he is about 95% trained i SWEAR!! the only time he has an accident is pee during the night in his crate because he just cant hold it that long i guess. no poop for about a month already! maybe im just lucky? but you just have to be constant. watch him like a hawk and look for signs. if hes gonna poop hell probobly start circling, take him out ASAP! and if hes sniffing around take him out ASAP! then when he goes potty in the right place, praise praise praise!! it might take a while but hell get it! |

| Wow.... you sound like you are having the same good luck that I am. The last couple of nights I have had trouble with the poo in the crate with him, but I am going to try and pull him off of the food like you said. I am loving this Yorkie Talk!!! |
