My new rescued Yorkie "London"
 

I'm so glad I found this forum. I have owned dogs my entire life but never one that weighs only 5 pounds. My little "London" was just rescued from a puppy mill. She was one of the moms. She's about 2 years old and was probably never out of her cage. Last night was her first night with us. She really took to human interaction and didn't want to be put down, but when she realized she could actually walk around she got SO excited!! She loves mirrors!
I'm writing for advice on how to help her with the one problem I've noticed.
We brought her home about 8PM last night, I tried several times to get her to go potty outside but she really didn't understand the concept. She slept with me in my bed all night without any accidents. This morning I was really worried because it had been almost 12 hours since we brought her home and still she hadn't "gone". Finally I decided that maybe she would only go in the crate since that what she had always done. I put her in her crate and left the room. 10 minutes later she went potty.
So I'm really happy that she won't go anywhere in the house but how do I get her to understand she can go outside. I know it's the first day and maybe her being around our jack russell will help her understand but any suggestions will be appreciated.
Also, any other help or suggestions, since I've never been a mom to a Yorkie!
She was so infested with fleas the shelter had to shave her so she looks kind of funny right now but she is the sweetest girl ever.
My only regret is that I couldn't bring her sister also, but I know she will find a home by Monday.

If you go to Animalleague.com its affiliated with the North Shore Animal League you can print a copy of Puppy Mill Behavior Profile and Rehabilitation Guide. It gives all kinds of helpful info. on what to do and expect from your new furbaby. Thank you so much for giving this little one a second chance at a good life. I wish more people would. Thank you for rescuing her! I just felt like crying when you stated that she was 2 and probably never out of her cage. This breaks my heart, people can be so cruel. I'm so glad she has you now:)

Welcome, congrats and good luck with your new baby! :) Give her time and she will learn alot...Especially with another dog in the home, she will pick things up fast

Welcome and Congratulations! The Puppy Mill Rehab guide will be extremely helpful. Most of the mill babies have some really odd behavior and this information will help you understand a lot of it. We have found that quietly observing them for a little while helps too and just let her set the pace. Before long that little sweetheart will realize that life is really good and that you are her hero!! :thumbup::thumbup: God bless you for saving her.

aww how exciting! yorkies are very wonderful dogs to own, full of personality and mine is pretty humorous. if her hair is pretty long make sure you brush it EVERY day or else she could get knots that can damage her skin, make SURE you get her nails cut once a month because yorkies are very.......hmm 'high maintainance' and if their nails get too long they wont walk anywhere and will be all down and out until their nails DO get cut. just let her see your jack go potty and eventually she will understand. make sur you take her for walks to keep her healthy. and a good food for her would be eukanuba, its a wonderful food and keeps them healthy and their coat shiny! good luck and if you have any questions just message me!!

I've always knows terriers are smart. Our Jack Russell amazes me on a daily basis but London is going to give her a run for her money. She already loves being able to play and run. We were outside and she finally played in the grass with her new "sister" Rory. She comes when I call her and got out of the garbage as soon as I said NO, London.
Later today my daughter and I will take them both shopping at PetSmart for London's new harness and leash and anything I can find for her.
I will certainly check out the puppy mill info you all have provided. That's a great resource, thanks!

Hi and welcome to YT! Thank you for opening your heart and home to a little rescue pup. She will give you unconditional love for what you have done to save her. Was she one of the pups from the puppymill bust recently that was on the news in IN? If you go slow and try not to raise your voice or be harsh you will see how her personality will continue to blossom.

My little Harry is a rescue too, he caught on really quickly, but he wasn't 2....what has worked the best for me and Harry is to stay calm.....they do pick up on our emotions so quickly. Some on YT gave me great advice...they said dogs live in the moment....it's us humans that remember all the bad things....so everytime you look at your baby....don't think about where she came from....think about how happy and lucky she is now:D

God bless you for adopting London. I can't wait to see a picture of her, even though she probably does not have much hair at the present time. Also, please include a picture of your Russell.

Congratulations and God bless you for giving London her new forever home. Lolita is 5 and we just adopted her. She was not housebroken but we just watched her really close and took her out every time we felt she needed to, told her good job Lolo and gave her treats every time and now we are 6 days with no accidents :rolleyes: She has been home for a 8 days now and is adjusting beautifully. I know you would not of taken London in if you didnt have lots of love in your heart so I know you will be able to get her through this quickly.

London's personality has really started to show and I love it. She hasn't actually "met" our lab yet but when she sees him thru the door now she growls at him! It's so funny, he just tilts his head at her like, Huh?
Tonight my husband said to him, "Barkley, that is a dog, can you believe it?"
Barkley is a massive lab, 117 lbs at last weigh in a a gentle giant.
London is the one that I'm concerned about and I don't want to push her into a situation she isn't comfortable with yet.

She gets spayed on Friday and I'm very nervous about that, she is SO tiny! I will just try to not think about it!

New subject: how do I get a picture to show by my name on my posts? I've tried and can't seem to do it.

Ok, I figured out the avatar, now I want to make it a slide show..

Oh, I wish I could help you there. Sometimes nice,talented members come on and offer to make some animated avi's...that's how I got mine.;)

Here is a link for just about anything that you would need to know how to do or make. The moving slide show is called an animated avatar and it is the very first post in this forum. It make a larger one like mine, you need to be a donating member but you can make one that moves without donating.

If you need help either post to the thread or PM me and I would be willing to help. But I have to say that Nancy1999 and of course Peanut are the best. :)

Using your Jack Russel will definetly help. That's how I get a new one to get the concept. That and a lot of standing outside. LOL
