| First Puppy Class - Not Exactly What I Expected Joey and I went to our first puppy class yesterday. This isn't something I've ever done before so I didn't know exactly what to expect. I thought there'd be more time spent on socialization, both with the other dogs and with their humans. [It's a class designed for puppies 12-18 weeks old.] The only socialization done was an exercise in which we walked around the room with our pups and greeted each dog for a count of 3 only before moving on. Instructor said that pups need to learn to break eye-contact after 3 seconds so that other dogs don't perceive them as a threat. The rest of the class was spent teaching sit, down, wait, and leave it. Does this sound like other young puppy classes? |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | That wasn't my experience, but I don't know that it's wrong. In our puppy class, they let us come in early and socialize with the other dogs in an xpen before class started. I've heard about the breaking-eye-contact thing with dogs that are aggressive. It sounds a little strange for puppies, but again, I don't have enough experience to be critical. Hopefully, someone else will have better feedback. Goody luck.

| Our puppy class was sort of like you described. I think the first lessons were about other things, but basically the same format. |

| Sounds on the up and up to me. In fact, sounds better. Ask your trainer in the class about socialization times. I bet they will say that socialization will be earned by mastering the skills you guys are learning. If so, then it's a perfect class for you. If not, then you can still network with the other puppy owners...set up some play times. |

| We attended puppy kindergarten at our vet's. The puppies were all brought into one room and then let go to party and sniff. It was hilarious and we had no problems with big dogs fighting or things like that all the puppies were approximately the same age -- both big and small dogs attended. |

Perhaps Hamoth is right that they will socialize more after learning skills. I hope so! It is called a "Puppy Socialization Class" after all! | |

| Scout is taking puppy kindergarten and we do have "social time" before class so everyone can get their sniffing out of the way. Only problem is all the other dogs are so much bigger than Scout! They are all puppies, but they want to play by pawing him, so I have to really watch out. Last week was week 3 and all he wanted to do was play with the other dogs the whole class and would NOT work! He has learned alot, but I guess he was just having one of those days...LOL I think he is learning alot just by being with the other dogs in a controlled situation.
