I'm so frustrated with this whole potty training thing! I've tried taking Kya out for five to ten minutes, and she won't go, then putting her in the crate for 15 minutes, but she just never goes! I've tried staying outside until she gives in, and an hour and a half later nothing. She can hold it over 13 hours, which I know is horrible for her, but she won't go in her crate and she won't go outside. I'd love to praise her to death if she'd just go outside once, but she's not interested at all! Does anyone have advice for extra difficult fur babies? I think someone could make a lot of money if they could potty train puppies during the day while people work lol I know I'd be up for it! |

Hi, Lets start here....if she is not going in the crate or outside where is she going? |
Right by the door on the carpet when we come back in. As soon as she hits carpet for a second she goes! |
Ok so this might not be what you want to do but it will not last forever. Get some pee pads and place them where she goes after about a week or so or until she is used to going on them. Once she is consistent with that then move them right outside the front door, once she is used to going outside move it a few inches everyday until you have her going to the spot you want her to. When she is consistent on the pad outside where you want her to go then remove the pad. This should work. I hope this helps |
Why don't you carry her from the door to her crate when you bring her in? That way, she'll have to go outside. |
I am having almost the same problem with my 6month old Max. Actually I just had him neutered today. But anyway I have been using pee pads and my 4month old does great! she is a dream but he will not go until I leave the room. I take him to the pad in the mornings and I know! he has to go but he just looks at me and shakes. I wait and I wait but he never goes so then I think ok well im gonna put him back in the crate and try in a few more minutes... get him out again and still nothing! its only after i walk away does he just go anywhere... no real particular spot either... I mop my floor 2 times a day or more to pick up any smell that may keep him going back.... he just looks at me like im crazy. lol I just don't know what to do with him. It is very frustrating |
is the carpet she is going on a door mat? is it movable? if it is, pick it up and don't give her that option of going there. what does she do when she is outside? is she on a leash? |
I'm really sorry, I can't be of much help. I am having issues with my Abby. She does let me know when she has to go out so we do pretty good during the day and evening. It's during the night we have the issue. She messes in her crate. Her crate is only big enough for her to stand up, turn around and lay down. This makes me crazy!! I was so upset tonight. I had just taken the old paper (with pee on it ) out of the drop pan in her crate, wiped down the drop pan and bottom grate in her crate with Nature's Miracle ( of which I should buy stock in ). I left the door open to her crate. I turned around and she was in her crate. I thought ok, but as I looked closer she was peeing. She just walked right in there and peed:eek::eek::eek:. I am just beside myself. She didn't even tell me she had to go. I don't know what to do with her anymore. Right before I put her in the crate at night, about midnight, I take her out to potty. I get up about 5:45a and take her out. Sometimes, (most times) she has already messed in her crate. She is 8 months old and I would think she would be able to hold it longer than 6 hours. She is not fed late. This just makes me crazy as the other 2 yorkies I had, never did this. I was so very lucky with them and I NEVER had a problem with potty training them. I guess I was just very, very lucky. |
I am also very frustrated with my 7 month old yorkie that we just picked up this past weekend. We don't think he was potty trained at all. We are doing the pee pads and he holds it for a long long time. And when we put him on the pad because we know he has to go. He will sit on the pad and look cute. So we have a feeling he does not even know what the pad is for. He is also afraid of the grass so he cannot even get on the grass. As far as the poopy part- oh my gosh, he poops all over the tiles ( we put him in the playpen) and only does it once a day, is that normal? But he makes a big mess. He even poops in his bed. I thought they don't do that? My other yorkie did not have that problem at all. This new one is very small so we are waiting a few more months to neuter him. Please help!!!!!! my husband is getting really frustrated. |
Yoshimax, I feel your frustration. As I wrote in my post here, my Abby messes in her crate. She does sometimes mess on her blanket. Neither one of my other ones ever did that. It just makes me crazy. You are right. It is said that a dog won't mess where they sleep. Well........this one does sometimes. I got her when she was 3 months old and she was not trained at all!!!:( I wish I had the answer. Sorry, I'm of no help. Just share the same experience.:( |
Abbysmom08- No problem. I was just baffled as to how a little tiny dog could poop so much at one time. He holds it all day and then does the big one. :D I am very diligent in watching him and waiting for him, but when I am at work or out of town for work, my husband does not have the patience since his work hours are all different and he does not get much sleep as it is and he has to take care of our 2 yorkies and a maltese. :p |

Also since she still goes in the crate at night you may want to wake up at 3 to take her out again. i know it sucks getting up in between only a 5-6 hour nap. mine was able to hold it at that age and she was crated as well. When you take her out at midnight are you sure she is peeing and pooping? make sure she is, and if she is holding out a little, stay out there longer with her, on a leash, until she does. |

potty training We got Sophie a month ago when she was 8 weeks old and of course she wasn't potty trained. She would pee and poop anywhere:mad:Luckily we have tile floors all over the place so cleaning is piece of cake.I tried puppy training drops, but with no results.I used to put those drops on a paper in the litter box,but she would pee on the floor, away from the papers. But recently I got a playpen for children, big enough to put her doggy pillow, some chew toys, her food and water and a litter box.The first day she wouldn't go in the playpen. She messed the floors as soon as I got her out of it.But the next morning I was surprised to see that she DID go in the litter box.Still she won't poop in the litter box while she is in the playpen so I have to let her run around to do her business.I usually put papers on the floor, and she sometimes does her business on them, but there are a lot of accidents every day.Last weekend we were on a trip and we took her along. In the hotel I let her in my bed to play a little bit and she peed on the covers. It's not the first time when she does that.Sometimes we play and she suddenly stops and squats, right in front of my face.I wonder if she will ever get the idea where she is supposed to do her business. It's really frustating and I hate keeping her in the playpen too long. |
When we go out (on the leash) Kya just sits by my feet like she has no idea what we're doing out there. I try to get her to move but she's just not interested. I've tried carrying her to the crate and trying again a few minutes later, and nothing. She'll just try to get back to the house before me. It doesn't matter what it is, as long as it's past the door she pees. She just won't do it outside! |

at this point, if it were me, she'd get two options. outside or crate. if she doesn't pee, put her in her crate for a while since she won't pee in there, then take her back out. if she doesn't go again, put her back in teh crate. she's got to learn that either she potties outside, or she stays in the crate. a day or two of this won't hurt her and you'll be much happier once she finally pees outside. do not give her the option of not being in one of those two locations. since you know she pees by the door, don't let her go there. outside or crate only until she potties outside. |

The paper lines the drop pan. She doesn't stand on it. There is a grate between her and the drop pan. I just don't know. Last night, early evening, I left the door open on the crate and she just walked in and peed.:eek: She is usually very good about telling me when she has to go. I couldn't believe she just walked in there and peed:eek: I just know I am at my wits end with her messing in her crate. Well, I guess I'm lucky she doesn't mess all over in the house. |

this might be why she isn't getting it just yet. Take the grate out, and take the paper out. Divide the crate into a small space for her to go in, turn around, and lay down in. only enough room for a bed. |

I may have forgotten to say this but, she sometimes messes on her blanket also. So I would think she would feel that. Her crate is 19 inches long, 12 inches wide and 14 inches high. There is no room to put an actual bed so I put a little blanket in one end. It's really upsetting when she messes on her blanket. What's really upsetting to me is the other 2 yorkies that I have had, never did this. Potty training them was not bad at all. Once they were house broken, which didn't take long at all, they didn't mess in the house. I was just very lucky. That's one reason this is so hard for me.:( |
I brought my dog home last week and tried pee pads, but on day 1 she decided she would pee everywhere except the pads. That's when I decided it would be outdoor potty training all the way. This was a tedious process, but this is what I did. 1. I bought a spray at pet smart for potty training 2. I would take her outside every 3-4 hours (she's only 3 months old so she won't be able to hold it more than 4 hours or so - this is the hardest part because it means getting up in the middle of the night to take her out). 3. I found a command to say to her when she went outside - "go pee" it could be anything as long as it's consistent. I sprayed some of the spray on the ground and said "go pee." When she does go pee, I repeat the command and then I go crazy and say gooooood girl, good girl...etc. 4. when i'm in the house and she's out of the crate, I watch her like a hawk. when I see her sniffing around suspiciously, I take her out and say "goo pee." Sometimes it's a false alarm, but better safe. 5. I've discovered the power of Vinegar. I use it to clean inside the house and if she does have an accident I make sure to scrape it up very vigorously. Once the dog smells the pee, he's likely to go again on the same spot - they also sell enzymatic products at pet stores to remove odor, but vinegar has been working well for me. 6. I take her out after she wakes up from a nap, after she eats or drinks, and if more than 4 hours have gone by before she has peed. Day 1 and 2 she had a couple accidents and hasn't had one since. Has never gone in her crate. I also heard that if she's peeing in a specific place in your house you don't want her to go, feed her at that spot. Dogs are not inclined to pee where they eat or sleep. hope this helps. |
