That is sooooo awesome. I would love to get updates with the therapy process. I plan to have my puppy do the same. Posting a thread about your pups journey would be GREATYLY appreciated. As I am getting a puppy from Deb as well. She is such a sweet woman && highly accredited as a breeder. Her pups show that very well... I can't wait to see my Minnie Moonshine.!! : )) The wait is killing me. As I know that the wait will be well worth it.! Good Luck to you && I can't wait to see updates & pics.!!

Oh, and for some reason, we can't seem to post pictures? We have no "attachment" icon. Is it because we have a MAC? In any case, Her name is Penny. She is a little over 8.5 lbs. We specifically wanted a big girl as her new big brother Guinness is over 13 lbs, but solid! Penny will be my (Ty's) prospective therapy dog, while Guinness is handled by Tanya. Penny just graduated from puppy obedience class yesterday and we start basic class next week. She is doing very well and has been embraced by our large dog community. She has already been evaluated by senior Pet Partners evaluators, and they all agree she has great therapy dog potential. Can't say enough about what a sweet little girl she is! Deb did a wonderful job finding the right pup for us/me. We asked her to find us a dog that really loves people and had the potential to be a therapy dog, and that's exactly what we got. Penny has a perfect temperament. She is really drawn to people, just as much as people are drawn to her and she is a big cuddler. Did I mention that she is cute as heck? She is going to grow up to be a beautiful girl! Our vet says that she is very sturdy and solid. She has a straight top-line gait when she walks. The best advice I can give anyone who wants to have a therapy dog is choose a dog with the right temperament. An excellent breeder (i.e. Deb!) will be able to assess her pups and help match a pup to you. A big misconception is that you can train any dog to be a therapy dog, search and rescue, service dog, guide dog, etc. You can't. You have to find a dog with the right traits for the work you want them to do. Like people, dogs have different personalities. In my opinion most service dogs would be terrible therapy dogs because they tend to focus on their one person, and ignore all others. You can encourage a dog to tolerate being petted by a stranger, but that doesn't neccessarily mean they want it or like it. A therapy dog loves everyone and anyone They should not have a "type" of person they like. In terms of therapy work, the people you are visiting will notice if your dog is really engaged. For example, say your dog loves seniors, but does children. You decide to work in a retirement home. How do you avoid the visiting grandchildren? So to sum up, if you are thinking about therapy work, choose a dog with the right temperament. The training is the easy part! We've been keeping Deb apprised of Penny's wonderful progress. If folks here are interested. we can start a thread in the advanced training section?

| I have definitely been nothing but ecstatic about the 14 week old pup I got from Deb. She was so well socialized and confident from the second I got her. And even though potty training has been a bit of a chore (especially the first month and a half) since we didn't want to use pads and will not use a doggy door (a yorkie pup was stolen less than a mile away from my house back in May, so she doesn't go out unsupervised), it's so awesome that Deb had trained her to never go on a couch or a chair. Since we have had her she hasn't had a single accident on any furniture. Training would have been so much harder if furniture wasn't a safe zone for Cookie.
