fussy eater is new mum help!!! Both my Yorkies Bobby and Lily are fussy eaters, they always have been. What they will eat today they will turn their noses up at tomorrow, I have thrown away a fortune in different foods because they will not even look at them. I have tried dried, fresh and tinned foods, even cat food, to no avail. The only thing they both love is liver which is bad for them in large amounts, and dried jerky (which is a treat rather than a food). Lily has just had three puppies (it was an accident, she caught during her first season, Bobby was far cleverer than we were!!) We always intended to breed them, just not this soon. However she is a great little mum and the babies are sturdy and healthy. She is still being picky with her food, and although the text books say she will eat twice as much as normal and several times a day, she will still only eat once a day and not even then if she doesn't fancy it. I bought some special milk formulae for newborn pups and bitches who are nursing but she wouldn't have any! I am worried that if she isn't eating enough she wont be able to feed the puppies. The only thing I haven't tried is baby food! I read somewhere if all else fails try this. Has anyone found the answer to fussy Yorkies? If so PLEASE help! Thanks, Sue Last edited by suejenkin; 10-30-2006 at 12:31 PM.

If she doesn't get enough calcium, she will develope eclampsia, which is very serious. I'd be feeding her cottage and eggs if I had to. Have you tried giving her puppy food?

fussy eaters I tried her on puppy food when she WAS a puppy, but she wouldn't eat it! Do you think she will eat it now? anything is worth a try I guess. I will try the cottage cheese and eggs, I am guessing the eggs need to be cooked and mixed in with the cheese? Thanks for your reply, I didn't know about the calcium problem, so will try to get a good supplement for her as well. Sue

Thanks everyone for the advice. I tried the scrambled egg and cottage cheese and she loves it, so hopefully this will keep her calcium up. I also fried up some chicken liver and mashed a small amount in with a rice, chicken and veg baby food, and she lapped it up! I also bought some full cream milk and she loves that too. Two nights ago I had to call the vet at 1.30am as she was panting violently and running around and jumping up and down on the chairs and beds, she was really upset and apart from her not eating much, I had no idea what was wrong. The vet said it didn't sound too serious and to take her in first thing next morning. He diagnosed that she was stressed and had had a panic attack, we talked through everything and when I mentioned Bobby(The Daddy) was still around and that Lily growled at him every time he went near the playpen, he felt certain that this was the problem. He explained that everything she was doing was by instinct, and her instincts were telling her that some fathers eat their young, and it was stressing her because he was around, keep Bobby away and she would be fine. He prescribed a calcium supplement for her to take daily. A friend came and has taken Bobby for a couple of weeks, she also has a Yorkie and they are having a great time together, and, yes, the vet was right, the minute Bobby left Lily became relaxed, content and started eating well. I also took her puppies to the vets that morning and he said she was in great condition and that the triplets were brilliant sturdy healthy little puppies! He also said that if both my dogs are fussy eaters its because I made them that way! If they have eaten a certain food one day but then refused it the next, they cannot be that hungry, and the more different foods I keep buying and trying the more they will let me! So, once these pups are reared I will be less of a softy! Thanks again everyone I will keep you posted on their progress. Sue J

The wedding and the triplets Hi as requested here are some pics of my "family" We decided that as Lily's babies were due any day we would legitimise them! We arranged a very quick wedding on Wednesday 25th October, it was an intimate affair with only immediate family present! The bride wore a white veil and her Harrods diamante collar, Bobby opted for a simple cream top hat. On Sunday 29th Lily and Bobby's triplets were born, Daisy, Maisie and Dodi. Mother and babies are all doing well and Bobby has gone on a small holiday!! Sue p.s. I THINK I have managed to attach the triplets pic, but apparently the wedding ones are too big, so will play around and try to reduce them to show you another time!

Hi, I havent read all the thread but I just thought I'd add that sometimes I've given Tino baby food - usually cottage pie flavour and just microwave it for 30 secs.
