I think I should introduce myself here again as I have moved from downtown Toronto to Burlington, Ontario about an hour away from Niagara. |
Welcome Gardeness Welcome to YT! Although I have no expert information to offer, I am sure you will find everything you need to know about Yorkies on this site. I sure have! I can tell you that they are small, furry, portable and an excellent form of "home entertainment" with their hilarious antics. There has not been a day go by in the last 15 1/2 months, that I haven't had a good laugh. I have 2 Yorkies, MacTavish and Madeline and also have an 11 year old male Lhasa-poo, Mr. Cooper. Everyone gets along wonderfully. Linda |
Hi Potter I just went to your site and saw the pic of Siu Pao. He is absolutely adorable; loved the pj's. Welcome to this end of the GTA. Linda |
How to pick one? Good morning, Thanks for the welcome Xiju and Welcome Potter! So when you're in the midst of a few puppies to pick from - how do you pick your special one? What do you look for? Anything specific? I know - clear eyes and active...unless they're all sleeping ;) but what else? For this kind of $$ I want to make absolutely sure it's the right one. Ideally I'd like to find a breeder fairly close to me and visit the pups a few times before taking one home. |
Just found this thread! I am from Cold Lake, Alberta and my furbaby is now 6mths old and weighs 6pds. She is such a joy and I call her my "mid-life crisis" baby;) I've posted on the western canada pages but I didn't know this one existed! Hi to everyone! |
Gardeness A breeder in Barrie advertises on Kijiji. You'll find postings listed under Toronto & Barrie. Unfortunately, like me, you just have to keep looking. I got my Madeline last August in Owen Sound (nice drive in 1 day!). My daughter got her brother the same day. Since I am not into breeding or showing, these dogs are not registered, although they are purebred (we met both parents). We chose our pups by their overall appearance (eyes, teeth, bite, coat) and what our hearts told us. It was tough for me because I was replacing the brother of my MacTavish that I had to put down at 6 1/2 months old, but my daughter fell in love with the first one she picked up. Perhaps search this site for "picking a puppy" and go into the breeding forums and post the question "What do I look for". This site if a fountain of information. Best of luck in your search. Linda |
YorkieAunt Hi and welcome to "eastern" Canada forum. Is there a "central" Canada forum? If not, how could one be set up? It would be nice to get acquainted with those closer and find out what is happening in the area. Linda |
Hello Gardeness and Xiju Hi Linda, Hopefully we will have a meet up of our own for Yorkies around Burlington and Hamilton and maybe Oakville. That would be nice! Hi Gardeness, If you do a search on YT, you will find lots of info on how to pick a puppy. Some people tend to pick the first one that came up to them, some pick based on how they feel towards each pup and others use a guideline. For example, some will carry a pup on its back (like a baby) and look at whether pup is squirmy or not to determine how submissive/aggressive a pup is. There are other tests like shaking coins in a can to see which are timid and which are curious. Also, as you have mentioned, eyes are clear, ears are clean although I brought home mine with ear mites when he was young but it cleared up easily with ear solution from the vet. Good luck in finding your puppy! Just to share, I got mine, well I didn't even get to pick because he was the last of the litter because he was the bigger one but I saw him, melted in love and brought him home :) Even as a pup, he wasn't very naughty, very laid-back and was just a little timid but since I was home all day I socialized him lots lots and he thrives. For me, since I am a little shy and timid I prefer to socialize and train a pup that is a little timid then controlling one that is over confident/aggressive so pick a pup that suits you best and you will find it easier to train! |
Local Meet Up Potter, that would be really fun! Being new to this site, I'm still finding my way around. Right now I'm working on making an album. May take a while! LOL Linda |
