Hello - quesiton for a breeder? Hello everyone! I am bringin' home a new Yorkie puppy today and SO excited! I am a bit worried that I won't measure up to be a good mommy (like you all are - since you are all Yorkie Professionals!) but, I hope you won't mind me coming to you for advice once in a while. Here's the scoop: 6 weeks old today, male, w/o AKC papers, purebred But, my puppy did not have tail docked. A bit concerned about having that done, but it is recommended by a friend - I wonder how much it will cost me? And to hurt the puppy - is that OK? Hmmmm.... What do you all think? Candy4me |
tail Tails are nice to have..I dock mine pups, but if it was not docked at this age I would not do it. It is a painful surgery and not needed. I am more cncerned about the age..6 week is very ypung to leave the litter...good luck..and keep us up to date. |
Tail I agree with Pat. Don't put your baby through the pain of having his tail docked now. Just picture - you will know when he is happy - that tail is waggin. He will be so cute. I am using he and don't know if it is a boy or girl. He is so young to bring home though. Has he had his first boosters? Make sure you get his health record. Congrat on the new baby. Yorkies are great! :Puppy: |
I am curious how big this puppy is? I got mine at 8 weeks, got previous yorkie at 12 weeks and there was really just such a tremendous difference in sizes and amount of care they needed. I would never get one earlier than 8 weeks. Why are they leaving mom so early? Also, if the puppy having a tail is a deal breaker for you, please do not get it. Do not amputate the tail at this point!!! If you must have a yorkie without a tail, keep searching, but from what I understand it should be done just a few days after they are whelped and would be extremely painful for the pup at this point. Mojo: I read this on the Internet this morning and it addresses your statement about the difference in an 8 and 12 week old pup. Quote:
Pretty interesting . . . there is significant development that takes place after the pup is 6 weeks old and before 12-14 weeks. |
Candy, your puppy is young to be leaving its mom. Would the breeder let you pay for him and then keep him to a better and safer age? Having a tail docked at this age becomes an orthopedic surgery that is not minor. IMO it should not be done....your vet is the best source of info about the prpocedure... |
I agree with everything said here....don't take your baby until 10 weeks at the very earliest, tell your breeder if necessary you will pay her a bit more to keep her longer...(although you shouldnt have to) that is an irresponsible breeder letting these little ones go so soon! They do this because they dont have to clean up after them because the 6-12 weeks stage is the pee and poo stage! PS 6 weeks is far too old to crop the tail! when done between 3-5 days they cant feel it for the most part after that they can! |

First, congradulations on your new baby, but to be honest, 6 weeks is too young to be taken away from it's mother. But, too many breeders just want to get them out the door, so you will have to be a very good yorkie mommy for your young baby. Now, unless you plan to show the puppy, there is no reason to submit the puppy to the stress and pain of having the tail docked at this late of a date. Tails should be docked between 1 - 3 days after birth, or else it has to be done when the dog is old enough to be sedated, and if the dog is to be a pet there is no reason to have it done. I would suggest you get some nutrical and supplement the pup with a dab on your finger each day until it is at least 6 months old. |
post Carter's mom..great post. People are so frustrated when they are not trained at 3 or 4 months..poor babies are just getting good motor skills by then. Plus, a tiny one is even further behind, like a preemie. |
Oh, you all are great - this feedback really helps. I'm a little concerned about my breeder now, after reading this thread. He insisted on the pups all leaving today - they all just turned 6 weeks old. And, he was a big advocate on not docking the tail. Seems it is a subject with different opinions. Because this pup is going to be my new baby, I'm happy with him just the way he came. I've no plans to breed or show with this pup, just bought it to love......so I've decided to leave the tail as-is. :) 6 weeks old.....wow.....such a baby - good thing I'm at home 24 hours a day. I planned being with the pup every moment anyways, so that's good. I'm very happy with my pup, but now wished I had known all this info, before adopting the first puppy I found available. But, like I said, I bought myself a adorable companion, and going to try really hard to be a good mommy! I lost a baby a few months ago, so this will help me to ward off that sadness a little bit :). I have 2 kids already (ages 12 and 6) and they are SO excited about the pup. No name yet for the little dude! |

Hi - I had 2 pups to choose from, a small one at 1 # and a bigger one at 1.9 #. Because we have 2 BIG dogs already, an English Mastiff and a Dalmation, I chose the bigger one. I believe this is larger than normal for a pup at 6 weeks? Yeah, a bit sad the puppy had to leave at 6 weeks too....kinda unhappy that my breeder insisted on it now. |
Congratulations on your new Yorkie! General Patton came home to me this Friday, and he has been great! I am enjoying him as I know you will too! ~Bella, General Patton, and Maria~ |
Congrats! I know you will be a good yorkie mommy and you will have a lot of help here at YT. Glad you are leaving the tail, I hear they are gorgeous, just take a little extra cleaning care there! So many breeders just want that money and can't wait another week or two to get it. I'm sure your baby will be just fine. Have fun! Windy and Lida Rose |
