New Mom Questions/ Weight Gain

Hi! I am new to the list. I just found you guys looking for info. My girl just had puppies yesterday and I am wondering if they are gaining enough weight. We had 2 - males & 1 - female.

The pups should about double their birth weight in the first week. Congrats on your new babies!

Puppie Problems

My smallest puppy has only gained 1/8 oz since birth. Born Monday between 2-4pm. It is now Wed 7am. At about 3am this morning, the puppy was crying, when I got up the mom had it in her mouth and she kept putting it out of their box. I dried it off, got it warm and tried to get it to nurse. He wouldn't. I finally was able to get him to nurse about an hour ago. I made sure she pooped him. He is finally laying quiet. I am afraid to put her back in with them thinking she will put him out again.

Any suggestions??

mom might be telling you that there is something wrong with the pup if she keeps taking it out of the box. I'd put him back in there one more time and keep and eye on her. If she moves him away again then i'd take him away and hand rear him, tho be prepared, he might not make it for reasons you cannot see.

Any suggestions on hand rearing. My vet went on vacation yesterday and I don't know what to do.

bump

hopefully someone more experienced will be able to help you. i've never raised a litter of yorkies before. only shelter pups

I would ask a friend for a referral to another vet while your vet is on vacation. I haven't had to hand raise a puppy but getting up every 2 hours is not easy.

Little Puppy

I just went through a similar experience with 5 puppies and the mom was pushing out the little girl. Three times over 3 weeks she tried to push her out until she got strong as the rest. Nutracal is a miracle for small puppies, a small amount about the size of the end of a match stick rubbed in the upper mouth and tongue. In minutes the blood sugar is up. I just would watched her nurse. I put her on the teet at the rear where there is more milk and Mom did not bother her. Twice I found her cold and hypoglycemic because Mom had pushed her out. First give the Nutracal and warm her. I threw a washcloth in the dryer and used those to warm her and my body, after she pepped up I used an eyedropper to supplement a few drops to the hair on her lips and she would lick it. I was really terrified that she would aspirate, so the rear teets worked well. She quickly learned to go there herself to get out of the big boys way. Almost 8 weeks and thriving. The vet told me to keep a very close eye on her during thoses first few weeks. For whatever reason, Mom's sometimes do this. My theory is that the big pups push the little one off the teets and then the suck gets weak and Mom thinks something is wrong. Hope this helps. I had many, many sleepless nights. Good luck!

Thanks for your reply! Mom is beginning to be a better mother. My little guy is one week old today and has almost doubled his birth weight. This morning he was at 6 ozs. The other 2 have more than doubled their weight. I think things have settled down. I have just made sure he latches on good and has the opportunity to nurse w/out getting pushed off as you said. I will remember the supplement. Where is the easiest place to find it? Thank you!
