Mollys Pups Arrived - What to feed mum?
 
Hi all in the USA..good news Molly finally gave birth this morning around 11.00am.....3 girls and 2 boys...all doing well.
I know she wont be interested in food at moment as she has eaten all the afterbirth...but i did give her some warm goats milk which she loved.... she is such a fussy eater any suggestions what i could tempt her with and how often should i offer her food?

Be ready for some major diareah after allowing her to eat all the afterbirths.

But, since this isn't your first litter, I know you have the drill down on what and how often to feed a nursing mom.....

yes after eating all that after birth mine would be throwing up and diareah. I always try to take that away before she had a chance to eat it. They say it helps but mine did fine without it. I kept puppyfood and some stuff I got from my vet and kept it in front of her at all times. A nursing mom needs to eat a lot when she is feeding pups

....gosh she has just come downstairs and gone out for a wee!!!!!! i know that the afterbirth will give her a bit of diareah.....i just went in and looked at her and she was looking at her dish for food!....gave her some lambs liver that i cooked and she wolfed it down.....and some more goats milk.....just want her to get enough calcium.....ive got the tablets and will be putting in
a quarter tablets 2 x day.....you dont think im over doing the calcium bit do you Mardelin with goats milk as well? I do value your opinion by the way x

Nope not with the # of pups she had...However, I would ask your vet for some CalSorb or Oral Cal Plus to keep on hand...You need to make sure she's eating at least 5 meals a day...keep that bowl filled...and there are a couple of recipe's for whelping pudding in this section....Scrambled eggs are a must. But, even with all the precautions....you still have to be on the lookout for eclampsia.....

Congrats on your beautiful litter. I have a formula that EVERY girl I have ever offered it too has loved it. It is wonderful to get her going until she gets to that really hungry stage. If interested please email me yorkies4ever@juno.com

Glad all is going so well...
You just never know about afterbirths...the vet told me it is instinct because the animal can not always leave the "den" to search for food and it protein...

I have had bitches whelp and eat all the afterbirths and not the slightest problem...others needed vet meds after eating one...or none. The more I know about bitches, the less I really can rely 100%...LOL

Hey Yorkierose, I'm laughing at you BUT you sure are right. When you think you have seen it all, had it all and done it all, these little guys will throw something new at you. I really keep thinking after 30yrs nothing can surprise me, WRONG!!!!

Hi all, getting a little concerned with Molly a she is panting alot....im givening her calcium tablets,goats milk, chicken mince,liver, offerning her everything but she isnt eaten that much, but wanting the milk alot.....she is settled down now but will start the panting again...hope its not what i think the 'e' word?

It's normal for panting...think about (that is if you have had children).....hormonal changes.

But, you've been breeding for 10 years, you should know this and if you're concerned....get her to the vet, don't sit here and ask questions, that's wasting time... precious time that can stand in the way of your girl's health.

Just to let you all know who have kindly replied to my thread that Molly is doing fine.....took her to the vet today who informed me, no high temputure, she looks fine, she looks well in herself, (its me thats panicking!) but gave a injection to increase her appititie and also incase of any infection delveoping. Plus she has had a receipe i kindly got from a YT member. Todate, she is well, eating finally, and pups growing and all lovely shinning quiete pups!.
Im ending this thread now,and thanks again....
oh just 1 more thing...and this is for Mardlaine....while i appreciate advice given there are times we, as experienced breeders, do require a 'second opiniion'.....so please if i post another thread try not to be so sarcastic and go on as if you are the only experienced breeder on this site!. You gave me a hard time before when i lost Stella (RIP) which upset me dearly! (and also got me banned from the site!)

See, this is what I think is wrong with the breeding section. Shouldn't it be your in-person mentor that you get your second opinion from versus strangers on the internet?

I agree and there was nothing sarcastic in my post.....only concern for the dam....basic questions were asked, I answered with concern that an experienced breeder of 10 or 11 years didn't know the answers.

I do know that if I was concerned over my girl i wouldn't be sitting on a computer typing questions....I would be on my way to emergency with her.

Shasha, Mardeline has been a Breeder/Exhibitor for a very long time. She means no harm, just trying to help your Bitch and pups. You really should listen to her. She is a wealth of knowledge...
