Cry Please Help new mom kills pup and not nursing acting strange!!!

Hi everyone well today was an awful day my dog finally had her puppies today I was o excited when at 2:30 a.m she started panting still just panting at 3:30 a.m. then around 9:30 started yelping so I knew we were close sure enough with some KY jelly help she popped out her first which was a very very tiny girl then 10 minutes a breach boy presented himself and then nothing but she was acting wild crazy like she was still in labor then I realized she had a puddle of clear fluid underneath her and no puppy presenting so I rush her to the vet where they tell me after doing an x ray that their is a big puppy and she likely can't pass it and will need a c-section I was really concerned that the puppy would suffocate and die but they did say that the puppy had some fluid behind it whether it was enough they wouldn't know until getting in there and seeing. The vet says they will call me in an hour to have me come back and get her. Then soon as I walk in the door they call and say she had the puppy all on her own. wow! Yeah for small miracles and $600 awesome!!! So I go back pick her up and her puppies. But when I arrive she is acting very very strange refusing to stay in the crate with them which alarmed me right away so I say some thing to the vet and they inform me that she's been through a lot and possibly when get home she'll calm down and allow them to nurse. So I get in her kennel and try to help the puppies to nurse but still she didn't want anything to do with them just keep trying to bury them with the blankets and her nose like she does with her bones. So I'm scared and confused so I try to pet her, love on her and get her to lay down with them but still nothing she was just licking them like crazy. Then I laid down on my bed to nurse my almost 3 month old baby then once he was asleep I checked on her and realized she had one of the puppies in her mouth I get her to let it go in a panic knowing something wasn't right and realized she had punctured a hole in the little tiny tiny girls stomach and taken a chunk out of her nose which wasn't bleeding but her puncture was. So I grab up the puppies and rush back to the vet where they tell me she died!I was hysterical what started out so exciting now was so sad! I was devastated I called my husband bawling.I couldn't believe it!The vets office said she likely was abandoning the pups and I would have to nurse them more bad news. SO I get home separate her from the only two pups left the two boys nursed them with a syringe. The stud's mom then finally comes to offer a lending hand and take a look at the situation and brings her female just in case I need to her female to foster the pups since she still had milk but had weaned her pup. She said basically she was treating this squeaker toy she was playing with kinda like her puppy it was really strange and then when the puppies started crying she didn't know what to do and started panicking. We finally got her to calm down and I hide all her toys from sight. I forced her to nurse the pups by gently holding her down. I did this two separate times because she still will not lay there to nurse them finally some of her instincts start to kick in and she starts to stimulate them to pee and poop. But she is obsessed with doing it has anyone else gone through this? and is it normal? I actually had to make her stop because that's all she cares about doing she could care less about nursing them all she wants to do it lick the privates. I am so worried she is gonna hurt the other two. She is not responding well. Please anyone that could offer some advice that would be great I am worried through the night she won't nurse them or might lay on them or kill one.She is not acting like a normal mom she will turn 2 in September.I am so so worried She is now a little better as of 11:00 p.m but still will not stop licking them she is NOT licking the pups all over just the bowls...I had to have her lay down to force nurse again. But still scared to go to sleep please HELP

I hope all your puppies survived the night. I wouldn't leave mom unsupervised with her pups ever until she starts acting normal. It is possible that the tiny one expired and that's why she ate it or that there was something wrong with it. I know it's gross but I've seen it happen. I'm sorry I don't know for sure about her strange behavior, I can only hypothesize that that last big puppy's birth hurt her terribly but more likely, the visit to the vet stressed her out. That she is a first time mom makes it more likely that she would be freaked out. What was her temperament like before breeding?

I know I would not leave those pups alone with her for a second. If I had no better advice, I would hold her and allow the pups to nurse and hopefully her maternal instincts will kick in with the nursing. Also, of course, the pups are getting the colostrum from the mom by the initial feedings. I would put the pups in an incubator, separated from the mom after she nursed them and pottied them. I would not let her excessively potty them. That would scare me because I've heard of a bitch doing damage to a pup's anus.

She might act crazy when you take them away but I wouldn't let her obsessively potty the pups. Return them to nurse and potty and remove them again.

There might be much better advice from someone who has actually had a bitch act like this but this is what I can think of unless someone gave me some better advice.

I hope she settles in because otherwise you are in for a very long sleepless haul and you have a 3 month old baby so if you really might need some outside help. You mentioned the stud dog owner might be able to foster the pups so that's another option in the wings.

Please update!

Your profile says your girl was born Sept 21, but doesn't give a year. Did you by chance breed her during her first year?

She mentioned at the end of the post that she was turning two.

I guess not all dogs are cut out for motherhood.

Most likely the momma did not intentionally hurt the puppy. New mommas need to be confined to a small private area away from other dogs. They have to feel secure. I always have my new mommas in an exercise pen with sheets hung on the sides for more privacy. Often a new momma, if not confined, will try to pick up the pups and move them. This could be what your momma was doing and she could have accidentally bit down to hard on the pup.

It is normal for the momma to lick the pups a lot. Please keep us posted on how she is doing.

I agree, and it's also common for new moms to be a little anxious about things. I hope your whelping box is in a private area. Also, be sure she is getting plenty of calcium. If you search on her for whelping pudding, there are some great recipes. If she is not getting enough calcium she will be even more restless and could become aggressive towards her babies. Good luck. I really feel for you having a new born yourself and if you wind up having to hand feed these babies, well, I don't know how a new mom could do it.

Hi guys puppy update we are now doing good!!!! Mommy instincts are starting to kick in!!! It's a miracle I think she was just confused and had been through a lot the vet had them separated too which likely didn't help her bond.I got up two times in the night to have her nurse the pups and again this morning and afternoon by this evening she is starting to lay down to nurse them. I took her into the groomers and had her belly shaved again and nails cut and she was in protect mode growling and saying back off from my babies. I do not allow anyone to touch them either. Keeping the kiddies far away!So her instincts are kicking in she just needed someone to show her what to do. I am so excited the smaller little boy who was born at 5.2 oz is now up to 6 oz I named him Mason after my baby boy and the bigger one who weighed 5.9 oz is now 6.4 oz and I named him Riley after my other son my husband joked and said so Emily died boo hoo which is my daughter's name bad joke!
here is the link for the first album I couldn't find my awesome 10.2 mp camera so I had to use my husbands but they are graphic no doubt and very detailed birth photos. I don't have any of the third birth sine the vet helped with that one and wouldn't allow me to be there.Day two photos:

I am giving her vitamins should I be giving her something more? she now only leaved them to go potty or when I make her go potty and she won't eat or drink so I give her soft food which she will eat 3x a day and put a bowl of water up to her every so often to make her drink so she's getting more protective and her mommy instincts are kicking in. Thank you everyone for your warm wishes and prayers. I thank you all!!!

Everyday I will post their progress and photos and let you all know how the babes are doing. BTW when do I tape their ears at what age and should I be doing anything special for them at this stage or just let mom do the work right now?

You can use a warm washcloth to wash her or babywipes. I wouldn't really put her in a bath tub for a couple of weeks yet.
