Signs of mama starting to wean
 
my babies are 4 1/2 weeks old(actually One month today), I was told by the previous owners that she normally always weans her babies at 5 1/2 weeks but over the past few days it doesn't seem like them have been eating as much and when I weighed them, they actually dropped an oz. So I fed them food yesterday and today. The girl eats it up real good and the boy is a little slower but gets it.

This morning they were feeding off of her and she all of a sudden got up and when they tried to feed again, she growled at them. Is this signs of her starting to wean them?

She is not mean to them and stayed in the box. I did feed them the mush so they ate.

Sounds like she is tired of them. I am going thru the same thing right and had to start feeding mine at 4 weeks. I put mama in every four hours and hold her down and place each pup on a teat. The small puppies get the fattest teat. i continuee to hold her until the babies fall asleep or get very still. I just pat her and rub her head and etc to keep her calm. Next week I will leave mama out all day only putting her in at night. Mine will be six weeks on Tuesday.

I have a litter that is almost 10 weeks and momma will still let the nurse some but then she will growl at them. The growling is normal, she is just letting them know they suckled enough for now. My momma really does not have hardly any milk and the pups are eating the dry Chicken Soup puppy food very well.

I don't have to do that. She is still allowing them to eat off of her on her own, but she wanders away from them more often but always goes and checks on them.

She is a very good mommy and is always cleaning them. There are times when I come home that she would rather sit with me than them but I just go sit next to the box while she feeds them.

At this age puppies milk teeth are coming in and they are sharp. She maybe reluctant to feed them because of this and may pick up the nursing again in a few days. Mother's milk begins to change consistency at about 5 weeks, coincedental that teeth start coming in at the same time. Great time to begin the weaning process... Some moms continue nursing until 10 weeks of age; I know mine do, but I think at that age it's just a comfort thing, satisfying their sucking instincts.

Bella Mia is starting to do the same thing with almost 6 week old puppies....A Lot less time with the puppies and more time with the family. When the pups cry she goes and looks in on them but she doesnt stay long. When she nurses it is maybe 5 minutes 10 maximum maybe 6 to 10 times a day. It is more like little snack nursing.
At first the puppies didnt want the dry crushed kibble and they were slow to REALLY eat the mush but they all finally picked it up even the little one and now they eat mush 4 times a day and dry crushed Chicken Soup kibble is there all day...well at least until one of them tips the pie pan. I have one pup now that likes to "dig" all the food out and then eat it :confused: Bella has not growled at them yet, not even playing. When she is done nursing she just jumps out of the pool.

Also, it is important to make sure their toenails are clipped. At four weeks the nails can be like little razors on the mommas teats and that will make her reluctant to let them nurse.

You're right, I begin clipping the tips when they are a week old. That and shaving ears to assist them in coming up and foot pads to make sure there is no slipping and give them sure footing when they begin to walk. Also trimming lil butts.

Do either of you ladies have a reccomendation for clippers?? I am using baby nail clippers but the whole process is easier said than done. It currently takes two of us to do it. We do it about every 2 weeks should we do it more often?

How old are your pups now? I start off with little finger nail clippers then I switch to the people toenail clippers when they are 4 to 6 weeks old and once they outgrow those I just use a small pair of dog nail clippers. Most of mine are very good at letting me cut the nails. I try to do them every week when they are pups and when they get older I do it every couple of weeks.

I use cat nail clippers. Easier to handle and I can see where I'm clipping. I clip nails, trim foot pads, ears and lil butts every week.

The pups are 6 weeks old on tuesday. I was just wondering if small dog clippers would be easier than the baby clippers. It takes me along time...I try to do it after they ate so they will be a bit more sleepy and less squirmy but that isnt working so much anymore!

My mamas do not mind being put in during the day, for short periods, but they (one especialluy) do not want to be penned in with them at night. So I leave a dish of food, (baby rice cereal, goats milk and canned puppy food) in the pen at night. The younger litter eats theirs all gone, but the older litter does not. I'm thinking one mama has more milk than the other.

They are all nice and fat so not worrying.

You could try them. Some people use the small nail clippers for cats. When I cut nails I usually take each pup away from the others to cut their nails. Most of the time I will take them in the bathroom.
