| My Vet Will No Longer Dock Tails - Michigan We just had a puppy Tuesday morning. He's doing great. I called to make his appt to get his tail docked this morning, and was advised that the vet will do him (as they agreed to when we were there on Tuesday)... however, they will no longer be docking tails as it has been deemed "animal cruelty". So where does that leave us who desire to show? Doing it ourselves? Will we soon be fined for animal cruelty by trying to adhere to the AKC standard? |

| No. But the AVMA (?) recommended this spring to stop the procedure due to it being catagorized as animal cruelty.... and my vet has decided to stop the practice. I had written my prior post before talking with the vet in person this afternoon. |

You might ask him to show you how to do it, since you plan on showing yourself.

| My sister is a vet in New York City and just about had a fit when I told her I was getting ours done. She says she won't do it either. |

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | Interesting. I'm in MI too. My regular Vet has never down them...tails or dews. He doesn't believe in it. So I had to get a different vet just for the tails and dews. I am now doing it myself, but to be honest, since raising Biewers.....I love the tails and wish it was more accepted for the Yorkie to have it. |

| You can still show a dog with an intact tail. It's not supposed to make a difference, per AKC. |

| Yes, you can, there is nothing to prevent you from doing so. However, the AKC/YTCA Standard states tail docked to medium length.

I have been thinking about it, and sometimes regret having them done. Oh, well, they're precious regardless, but I think I would like tails. | |

| So the AVMA says tails should not be docked because it is animal cruelty but at the same time they say gestation crates are okay for pigs? There are plenty of vets who will do it in MI I'm sure.

| Our vet still does it. He shows so I think that may make a difference too.

| AKC does not say that it doesn't make a difference. They state that it is up to the judge. I know there are several judges that will not put up a Yorkie w/ a tail at all. If the law changes they will have to consider them, but until then if the dog has a tail they will not put it up. There are some judges that will, you just will have to know which ones will or will not consider your dog. |
