Mardelin, I thought you said before to not use cottage cheese, etc. prior to whelp? I also thought that calcium received through food was absorbed and used by their body different than artificial means of calcium (supplements). Prior to whelp, I always give my girls 1/3 C. of fat free cottage cheese each day during their last week of gestation. After they deliver, I bump it up to 1/2 C. a day. I prefer to use fat free cottage cheese so it doesn't make the puppies too fat before delivery. Dee, I hope that your girl is able to whelp without any additional problems. |
Dee, I'm sorry you lost the singleton. Did you post that? If so, I am sorry also I missed it. I am so happy your girl is back to herself and now she's in labor. Not even a day to recoup for either of you. There goes your nap! Good luck with the welping. Prayer's for Mommy and babies and all to be fine. Hope things go fast for her. Your breeder's are a very special breed yourself's. Have no idea how you do it. |

Okay to hold it at bay, so it never comes at all… forget everything about giving tums, cottage cheese, cheese, icecream.. etc. It’s useless. The body needs the calcium to be delivered with the correct ratio of Vit D and Phosphorus or it doesn’t absorb it, it’s useless. Pet Cal has this correct ratio. Another thing that has it is, believe it or not.. a scrambled whole egg! Of course everyone knows not to start calcium until the litter is whelped.. no giving it to PG bitches… I do give some calsorb during whelping If things slow down on a larger litter, but never before whelping. Make it a general practice to scramble your bitch an egg every day, and depending on weight, give ½ to a whole pet tab per day. I gave it to a 8 lb bitch ½ in the morning ½ at night…this is the “daily dose” for about a 20 lb dog who was NOT nursing a litter…so just fine for ½ the size, but nursing a litter. I would grind up the pet tab in the food processor and put the powder in the egg when I scrambled it. Also, check your dog food for Soybeans, soy protein, or anything related to soy in any way. For SOME reason that is not completely understood by me (many menopause supplements contain soy, or are soy based, so this seems to be a contradiction).. soy protein can interfere with the absorption of calcium in dogs. If your food has soy of any sort, change to a food that does not for the duration of the weaning of the litter. |
http://www.revivalanimal.com/store/p...-Cal-Plus.aspx new product from revival, same as calsorb with out the nasty taste, does not make them vomit. If you must give calsorb, put it on your finger, and rub in bitches mouth, gums, inside of mouth, underneath tongue, then follow with nutrical, don’t just squirt a blob in their mouth. Even if they throw up, it HAS absorbed (not 100%.. but a lot) because the bloodstream picks it up immediately through the mouth..it does not have to be digested to work. Give calsorb or Oral Cal Plus if bitch is exhibiting signs of eclampsia. Some signs are very subtle. My bitch would dig like crazy when I took her outside, then try to climb up the side of the wall of the house…that was her first sign she was going south for me.. and we’d treat with calsorb immediately. Anything “odd” should be taken as a sign…especially, panting, pacing, restless behavior etc… understanding of course that bitches pant after delivery anyways for a few days. |

Ok! I may have to call on you for help. I've never bred two bitches that will deliver within a couple of days. But, the situation was unusual. One, that will be five and her last litter. And another that will be turning 3 and it will be her first......So, how do you handle it? Do you just go nuts. Let alone the whelping, but the raising of 2 litters. I always space mine to 1 or 2 litters a year, maybe even skipping a year. |
Dee I am glad your girl is home and doing better and I hope the whelping goes smoothly |

Oh my goodness Dee............what a time you and your girls have had! I am so sorry about the loss of the singleton out of your champion girl; did I understand correctly in reading...... Quote:
And then to top that off along comes the trouble with eclampsia and the c-section with your other girl. I AM glad to hear that she came out of it okay and did deliver 5 babies. Congratulations on their arrival. I will say some prayers that they all thrive and that mom continues to improve for you.......and also prayers for you to get through it all without wearing yourself down to much. |
Dee, I am so very sorry to hear of the loss of the pup. It is so heartbreaking to lose newborn. I know what it's like to have two litters back to back. Chizzie had her six  pups and a week later Chattie had her three. It was during the time I was recovering from the 4-wheeler accident. I can tell you that you are in for one heck of a ride. I wish you well with both of the whelpings-- do you know how many to expect from each mom? You will have more laughter and joy from a passle of pups it's just getting them safely delivered and past the first few days that is such a worry. Will be closely following your progress. |
Thanks God Quote:
