| Orphan puppy I have a little puppy my precious girl left behind, here's the original thread http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...abor-last.html I have a few questions: 1.) when will the little guy be able to go potty by himself without me having to wipe him? 2.) What should I wipe his bum, bum with? I was using an old warm wet rag but it was a little rough on him so I switched to using warm wet cotton balls, does any have any other unique idea's? 3.) Sometimes when he eats a little bit of milk or water comes out his nose not alot just a tiny bit. Is this normal or is the hole in his nipple to big. It just seemed to start happening yesterday, but I have noticed he is sucking harder and longer now so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I did go out and buy him a new bottle today, the one I have is about 2 years old (I never used it before but had it laying around for my rabbits, I breed/show Lionhead rabbits). I think thats all the questions I have for now. Thanks for all replies in advance

| I think you will have to wipe his bum to stimulate him until he starts eating real food then watch him to see if he is able to poop on his own. i would use a warm wet cotton ball. I think he is getting too much from the nipple . he has just started doing this so I don't think he would have a cleft palate. have you checked for that. is he still gaining as well as beofre? |

| I'm so sorry for your loss...I can't imagine how sad this must be for you. I've heard of using the warm cotton ball technique. When I bottle fed my Gus this would happen sometimes as well. I changed the nipple to one with a smaller hole to slow the flow down. I wish you the best of luck with this little guy, bless his heart! |

| I agree with Dee sounds like he is getting too much and it comes out his nose they can aspirate with just a little so when he starts going to town sucking pull it away and make him wait a a second then start again. Make sure you burp him after a feeding you would be suprised how loud they can burp. |

What I use for those lil newborns is a 3 cc syringe, fill with your milk, attach a premie nipple to the end. You can better control the intake of milk, monitor how much the pup is taking and there is less gas this way. Don't forget to burp the pup. He'll tell you when he's had enough. Water isn't necessary at this point, especially if your feeding goats milk (which is 95% closests to mother's milk) diluted 50/50 with distilled water. At about 3 1/2 weeks the pup will start lapping on it's own. Since he's an orphan pup I would go online to Revivalanimal.com and order some colistrum. As far when he'll start eliminating by hisself, about 3 or 4 weeks.

| Turn him on his back gently pry his mouth open. You can see the open palate of it is cleft. However, if I were you I'd call your vet and ask him.

I know I had to hand raise my last litter, and I didn't realize how much mom's keept the whelping area and puppies clean. I didn't lose my mom but had to keep her away from her pups because she was on heavy antibiotics. After she recupperated I put her in with the pups and she took over the cleaning. If he does get a bit stinky and messy, just take a baby wipe to him, until you can bathe him after his first shot.
