Poppy cock... is what I say to that! He's perfectly healthy, and doing just fine. Why would anyone intentionally kill a perfectly healthy puppy? Because he's the wrong color, or unique, or is it jealousy maybe? That's just cruel & nasty thinking IMO. She's probably never had one, so doesn't want anyone else to either. Just because he's no good for the ring, or shouldn't be used for breeding... he's still a live breathing being, and deserves a chance. I'm pretty sure she has a few flaws of her own (one being a very obvious personality flaw) ...but no one had her put to sleep for it. Yeash!
I understand AKC show breeders wanting only perfect show dogs, that fit the standard. However not everyone shows their dogs. I don't, and don't care if my dogs are perfect to them or not. They are perfect in my eyes, and that's all that matters.
These standards are meant for the show ring, not for your average pets... which is what he will be, providing he makes it of course.

I hope your pup will be okay. I just want to say that I feel that anyone who breeds yorkies should read and understand proper conformation whether they show or not. Structure is very important to the well being of a dog, especially the hindquarters. To many dogs are being bred that are not structurally sound and that causes problems like bad hips, knees etc. Very fine boned dogs are more subject to injuries. To many unknowledgeable breeders are just sticking two dogs together without any forethought as to what they are doing. It is ruining our breed. jmo

In summary your friends' breeding pair should never be bred again together.

And she would be highly encouraged to do the genetic screening on all her breeding animals to see which of her stock carries the Color Dilution Alopecia gene.

That belief is very in-correct, albeit a common one. Breed standards are for all breeders who wish to breed correctly in order to a)maintain the health of the breed b) maintain the temperament and working abilities of the breed c) and an overall breeders guideline in what to look for in your breeding animals.

I think the blues are gorgeous, but with my experience blue ivy when she was in my care and vet checked very healthy. I was terrified though not knowing much about blue borns, nor knowing nothing about breeding Yorkies at the time or breeding period, lol. I rue homed my female that had blue ivy, as well as her too. I have educated myself more with the help of other breeders and mentors. But it's nothing like hands on experience.

He has had absolutely NO health issues. He is living a great and healthy life.
All except for the hair on the tail, his hair has grown out beautiful!
The hair on his ears also does not grow long so I never have to trim the hair off his ears.

I think blue borns have always been born but breeders used to put them down and not talk about them because of the shame that they put down an innocent animal and because they did not want people to know that a blue born yorkie was born in their breeding programs but now with the sophistication of the internet we are becoming more aware of them and are able to see for ourselves that they are not all born deformed or ill just because of their color, they make beautiful pets!

probably a daft question, but to those in the know, is that to do with the blueborn gene? my grans Toby (rip) had slightly leathery ears with only very short hair that never grew, and a wee bald-on-the-top snout. i'd always put that down to a minor fault, but now its been mentioned i can't help but think it may be more serious than i'd thought... he had a dreadful immune system- to the point that he actually died of a tummy bug!
(please, please, i'm not meaning to scare anyone- i'm not saying that every single tummy bug can prove fatal for a blue born, but Kendra, your wee Mack had an issue as a pup with a parvo-like illness didn't he? )

I just had a litter (AKC) born & one of the females (the largest of them) is a grey with brown markings. She looks a lot like the pics of the womans from Spain.

Hi everyone. As you can tell i'm new here and I came upon this site cause as you can tell I had a grey Yorkie pop out. I was curious as to why this happened. So I started searching the internet. I had a litter of 5 and 1 was blue. I read that they can have problems and no problems. This was the first and last time i breed this male with my female. I guess they both have the gene that makes these babies and I don't want to be breeding babies that could have difficulties later in life. I would rather give the babies a fair chance in life instead of starting of with possible problems. Since these puppies can have problems I find myself in a situation I really don't want to be in. I'm thinking of keeping the puppy even though I don't want to cause I already have 4 dogs 1 more wont hurt but at the same time I really don't want another one. The reason why I want to keep it is cause I really don't want the dog to go to someone that wont care for it cause it has needs or can't afford the medical cost if it does end up having special needs. At least if I keep it I know it will be fixed and have the medical attention it needs. I have read on here that lots of people have had these types with no problems at all. I wish I could now if she was gonna be like that so I could find her a real nice home. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do to find her a great home?

I don't think there have been many with no problems. They have very low immune systems. The mom and the dad both need to be fixed as well as the puppies. Personally I think it is your job to keep her and make sure she gets the care she needs.

I would keep her just to make sure if there are health issues, you KNOW she will be cared for by you. Blue borns are a crap shoot, as to will they be healthy or not. I can understand already having 4 not wanting a 5th, but why take a chance down the road this baby has health issue and it's owners may not have the finances to care for her. Although most yorkie owners would mortgage their home if they had to, to get the finance for medical attention, but there are still owners for $1000.medical procedure they find the cost is to high for them and will put the baby down. Why take the chance with this babies life. Keep her.

That is a decision you are carefully weighing as you should. I would investigate a couple of things whether for yourself or a future owner - can this pup be covered by pet insurance - I would look for policies that cover genetic defects and be fully up front with the insurance company about blue born. I would say this pup was borne a non standard color called blue born - I see your policy covers all manner of sickness illness including genetic defects.


Then I would keep the puppy a lot longer than normal - up to a minimum of 6months old to one year old. \I would if I were to place the puppy in a qualified home fully disclose her health status. I would also spay her before releasing her to her new owner.

I would disagree...get a plan and register her as a mixed breed, because essentially that's what she is. She isn't a true Yorkie or she wouldn't have been born a blue.... Personel experience.... And I know the rates... Register as a mixed
