New Mom Panting A Lot...Should I Worry? My 11 month old YT just had 5 puppies 3 days ago. She seems to be doing ok with nursing them. She is eating and drinking, however, just tonight, I've noticed her panting A LOT. This is when she is in the crate with the puppies when it's time to "go sleepies" for the night. She also seems rather wrestless by pawing at the sheets in the crate and not getting comfortable. I am wondering if the panting is normal, or does it mean she is dehydrated from nursing the pups so much. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |
Poor thing is just a baby herself!!! She just had a very large litter for one so young. Her uterus is working to return to it's normal size and the pups are warm against her. She is making milk and trying to take care of all those pups. It's like a 14 year old trying to deal with all of that. The digging is probably due to anxiety, she's just a bit immature to deal with all of this. Try to keep her calm and let her know that she's doing a good job. Remember that she's immature and needs your support. |
I'd give the vet a call, you don't want to take any chances. I hope all is well! |
Actually after digging around, I found this link: Eclampsia (Puerperal Tetany, Milk Fever, Hypocalcemia) in Dogs I'd get her to the vet if she was mine:eek: |
Panting Poor little thing. Is she on any supplements for calcium-phosphorus and vitamins?? I would check with your vet and have her checked. |
That is a large litter and she is really too young to have pups so it probably thru her body for a loop. I would watch her very closely. The link that was sent to you be sure to read it thru and also touch base with your vet. Better safe than sorry. Deana Prestigeous |
You really need to take her temperature. If she is getting eclampsia her temperature will go very high and it can be life threatening. Make sure she is getting a calcium supplement twice a day. If you don't have any doggy calcium pills you can give her 1/2 a tum twice a day. |
Thank You To Everyone Thank you to everyone who replied to my thread about my 11 month old panting and feeling warm. Since I posted that thread, she seems to have calmed down a bit, and is doing much better with the puppies. Unfortunately, I cannot agree with giving the calcium supplements to her, as I was told by a 20-year veteran breeder that giving calcium to a Yorkie causes them to stop producing it naturally in their own bodies and that could hurt them in the long run. So, I give her goats milk, or a raw egg on a daily basis, along with Evo soft food for All Stages which contains a lot more protein than her dry Evo food. But, I do appreciate all of the responses. Goat's milk is a calcium suppliment. We don't encourage calcium suppliment for the mother during pregnancy but we do during nursing. A good quality puppy food will also give her what she needs. |
puppy having puppies A 20 year old veteran breeder would not have recommended your baby having babies until she was an adult herself. And she is wrong about the calcium supplements. |
another thing that will make her pant, is if you have the heating pad in her box and she has no where to get off it. If your using a heating pad, just put in on a portion of the box so she has a place to lay if shes hot. |
