| All Missourians - You can help stop puppymills Live from Missouri: ASPCA Supports Landmark Puppy Mill Initiative Home to an estimated 3,000 puppy mills—far more than any other state—Missouri has rightly earned the nickname “Puppy Mill Capital of America.” Puppy mills are large-scale commercial dog breeding operations where profit is given priority over the well-being of the dogs. The overcrowding and lack of basic hygiene, veterinary care and exercise that are the hallmark of puppy mills create puppies with numerous health and social issues—but it is the breeding dogs, the ones who never get to leave, who suffer the most. However, help is on the way! Missourians for the Protection of Dogs—a coalition made up of the ASPCA, the Humane Society of the U.S., the Humane Society of Missouri and the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation—is sponsoring a landmark ballot initiative to put the Missouri Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act before the state’s voters in November 2010. If the act reaches the ballot and passes, it will prohibit some of the worst abuses prevalent in Missouri’s commercial dog kennels—but the first step is gathering 130,000 signatures of support from Missouri voters by the end of April. “The Missouri Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act is a crucial step in combating some of the most horrific cruelty perpetuated by commercial breeders in Missouri,” says Cori Menkin, ASPCA Senior Director of Legislative Initiatives. “It will provide dogs with basic humane care, including sufficient food, water, housing and necessary veterinary care—things that, unfortunately, are sorely lacking in many commercial breeding facilities.” With only a few weeks left to go before the April 27 deadline, the pressure is on. Several ASPCA staffers have volunteered their time to help count and process the flood of petition signatures, and are currently on the ground in Missouri. “I am so happy to be part of this historic grassroots effort,” says Tawnya Mosgrove, an Illinois-based member of our Government Relations department. “Our hope is not only to help the dogs in Missouri, but that other states will follow suit with similar initiatives of their own. The work here is hard, but the end result will be worth every blister on my finger!” For more details about this landmark effort and a view from the frontlines in St. Louis, please read our blog report. Action Tip: Live in Missouri? Sign the petition today and help make history! Missourians for the Protection of Dogs

| It is a grassroots effort and politicians only care about the voters in their districts...I think you can send a message but it is the voters of the state who will help shutdown these mills. Can you believe over 3000 mills...my god how many dogs a year are pumped out...just awful!

| HMMM, the petition says it's to improve the conditions in commercial breeding facilities ( Puppy Mills ). My question is " Why are they trying to improve conditions " Why are they not shuting them down ( outlawing them ) Improving conditions will only still contribute to the end result. Bad breeding and congenital defects will not go away by cleaning up the living conditions of these dogs. I'm afraid the public will be under the assumption then that now mills are safe to purchase from. People just don"t get it. This could be a step backwards for these dogs. |

| It is such beyond sicken... I was thinking all night about these dogs and I came to the conclusion that, the amount of normal caring people in this world are really slim to none. Just think...We have the really evil and horrible sickos that do beyond aweful things to people, and they act that way no matter where they are, so they are picked out of society pretty easy. BUT then, we have these evil f-puppymillers that abuse and neglect innocent animals all day long for years, and yet most of the world don't even know who they are, they can't pin point them out, because in public they blend in, they act like "normal people", they go to church, or they are in politics, or they even sit next to me and you in the movies, they go to their kids school events, etc... I really just can't stand it anymore, I see these photos of puppy mill prisoners, and I just can't understand how anyone can think it is ok??? When a dog is so matted you can figure out what "it" is, how does that go by that it's ok, and these sickos then go off to church or their kids soccer game ~ WTF Last edited by TLC; 04-17-2010 at 01:19 PM. |

The public doesn't have a clue or very few do about puppymills...I see it everyday on YT...even though it is said over and over again. The USDA is not doing their job of inspecting the kennels and the laws are just ignored. If we can at least have these poor animals live in better surroundings this is a good first step.

| I'm starting to agree. I read a lot, post not as much, but when it comes to threads like this one, I always see the exact same people posting and commenting. Even if it's just chipping away at puppy mills, we really do have to start somewhere.

| Yes we do...it doesn't matter if people are outraged it is what they do with their outrage that is important. I have been posting about puppymills and getting our laws changed for 5 years...and slowly I am seeing some changes but we certainly need more. In this case we just need people in Missouri to sign a petition...

The inspectors are a joke. I bet there's probably 3 for the whole state. I wonder what the stats are .....and how can they 'inspect' these disgusting evil places and not try to shut them down themselves ....How do they sleep at night I wonder ?

Even on CL, on the Long Island Pets section, some wacko keeps posting over and over how STUPID it is for these people rehoming pets to "charge any type of fee" the posts are be-littling about fees. Before I got a chance to write something, thankfully some else wrote the importance of charging a small fee, to weed out bad people. And ya know that wacko still came back and wrote, the "badies" will pay a fee too, so it's not detering anyone by charging a fee! What a joke...people really amaze me P.S. I read a lot more than I post...Mostly cause I am at work during the day and I can read and read alot more than typing So I appreciate your threads Last edited by TLC; 04-17-2010 at 04:34 PM.

Now I'm not sure what you mean when you say AKC and all parent clubs would never allow it. Are you saying AKC is ok with poorly bred dogs ? Seriously not being smart here, Educate me. In my opinion USDA is a joke and I think they should be controlled by HSUS and ASPCA. One last thing, I agree with you that there should be moore members involved in this section. One thing I think would help is if it were moved closer to the top up where news is. What do you think ?
