Agility Just for Fun
 
Has anyone ever done some agility tricks just for fun?

I really don't want to sign Jackson up for classes or do anything for competition but I was considering setting up a small obstacle course for him in the backyard just for fun and exercise.

Any advice on where to begin?

Alaska Yorkie has .. Mike started in his backyard...you can see many of his courses on U tube...you can get a lot of the equipment on Ebay.

Mike (AlaskaYorkie) has had his little Eddie in Agilily competitions now, and he is doing great!! There are many Youtube videos of Mikes, check it out. (His user name is AlaskaYorkie, and his youtube is in his siggy)

I am doing agility with my Biewer boy in the back yard, we are using some childrens soccer equipment from target, some small cones, and some rings. Right now it is just for fun (he LOVES it), but we are going to start beginner classes in October :)

I taught Polo to go through a hoop and a tunnel for fun:D

My Yorkshire Terrier and I have been doing "Agility" this past year. We are about to start our 3 session next week. You don't have to do competitions, but they do train you the farther you get into it. I don't know if I will or not. The jumping is easy for him. But learning which ways to move for your dog to follow you is difficult, at least I think so. It is a great workout for my little guy~! Check out your local pet training places in your town.

I got the neatest little book from Amazon.com. It is called "The Little Dogs' Activity Book: Fun and Frolic for a Fit Four-legged Friend" by Deborah Wood. It has a section on "living room agility". It has how to set up a course for a small dog in your house. The whole book is geared for small dogs. We've done some of the thinking games. I recommend it.

Thanks for the book title. I heading to Amazon and look up the title.

Tootsie just graduated from puppy training last week~our last class was an agility class~sooo much fun!! Our trainer shows dogs but recommended using things like big rocks, steps, logs and different things that are in your own backyard!!! She also recommended taking the dogs to a childrens playground area if you don't have access to a yard!!!

Oh, shoot, I missed this. YES, absolutely, give it a try. If you start at home, just keep the jumps low. I made the mistake of putting up 12" jumps, and Eddie developed some bad habits. Just have him jump 4" or so. A log works. Or you can make a simple one out of PVC.

You can also buy a cheap kid's tunnel at Toys R Us and let them play in that.

If it's fun, consider signing up for a beginning agility class. They usually recommend that you complete an intermediate obedience class first, but all the dog really needs is a good "stay." If they can do that, they can do agility.
