I would do what feels right to you. You were in contact with these people so you have a better feel for them than anyone. If you feel that they are good breeders and that this was just a tragic freak accident then I would say go ahead and get a different puppy from them. If not, I would tell them that the loss is a little too much for you to get another so soon and ask for your deposit back. That way you can go to a different breeder if you want or just give yourself some time to mourn before you start looking again.

I am so sorry for your loss, unbelieveable how attached you become before you even hold them.
I agree with Sydney'sMom, only you know how you feel. If they are good honest people, I would believe they are just as hurt as you are loosing a puppy this age, I am sure he meant something to them too. The new puppy can't replace Maxx, but you will find love in your heart for him in addition to maxx.
If you have a contract-I don't really know how they work, we have real breeders who would probably know.
