Just like in the human world. A male and his sperm are essential in reproduction, but the female is the one that actually produces the offspring.
I can understand that when someone's buying from a pet store...but what's the rationale for that kind of markup when puppies are being sold on a non-breeding contract? I guess it's all in the demand...since females are more in demand, they feel they can charge more for them?
