This is such a terrible thing that happens...it is actually very common in our area....a completely residential area...I have no idea where they come from around here, but they are seen just about every week, sometimes 3-4 times a week, along with bob cats and there have even been a cougar or two seen on security cameras, roaming around at night. Then there are the predator birds that take our babies....I continously warn everyone I come in contact with, do not ever leave your babies for even one second, alone and unsupervised, anyplace, especially outside in your own back yard.....I warn all my new "parents" to PLEASE do NOT let your baby outside unsupervised or unattended....it just takes a second for something tragic to happen, and they are all so helpless and innocent. This is why I HATE doggie doors that allow this very thing to transpire....it sure is easier to let them go by themselves outside to potty, but when they dont come back thru that doggie door,........ I am so sorry for your loss and I know the pain....I lost a chihuahua to an owl years ago....my little dog was snatched up with me right with her in our back yard....all I could do was watch that monster fly off with my baby.....
