My fur baby has liver shunts and my vet and I decided to leave her on medication mainly because of her age ( she's almost 13).So far she is doing great. She didn't have the usual symptoms but she kept getting urinary tract infectios. Since she has been on the laculose (3 times a day), metronidazole ( 2 times a day) and prescription hill LD diet she hasn't had any uti's.

She will have periodic bile acid test done. She has gain weight and has more energy. There is definitely a noticeable difference. Hope this helps.
