The x-pen is a really good idea especially if you are away from home for hours at a time. You can wait on the crate if you do go with the x-pen. You do have to consider your vet costs. Maybe buy what you know you need right now and hold off on some of the other things and buy them one by one. The watering thing is a good idea but a little pup isn't going to be able to use one. Same with the automatic feeder. A little pup is just going to need some small saucers for now.

A bed, potty pads and a couple of dishes are basic for an x-pen. You probably want a small harness and leash to take the pup outside. I really think that time and training are the biggest investment that most pups need. Well, lots of love also.

You can get a small inexpensive crate to take the pup to the vet for now and get a better carrier or car seat when your baby is bigger and you know just what you need or want. If you don't know for sure how big your puppy will mature at (and most people do not) then wait on some of the more expensive items. I see tons of things on ebay being sold by people whose pets out grew them.
