It sounds like he's having some trauma reactions. It probably scared him so much, and he might be jumpy for awhile. I'm so sorry he's going thru this, it must be heartbreaking to watch. Keep talking calmly to him whenever he gets scared, so he doesn't react to something overly long (which can make it worse over time).
Another thing to think about if it continues, is a Thundershirt - it can really help w/ anxiety and fear.
