Yes, they have to go back in cargo to. As far as I'm aware, there is no flying into or out of the UK in cabin. BUT, guide & service dogs may fly in cabin and British Airways has changed their language on the information page to say, "we cannot
currently transport pets into or out of the UK in cabin"....so I'm hoping after the DEFRA changes at the first of the year, other changes may follow. As you have a couple of years yet, hopefully in cabin pet flights will be allowed by the time you return to the States. Let's keep our fingers crossed
