Both should really be used when giving a full haircut. Clippers on the body and shears/thinners on the head. I also use shears and thinners on the legs and to neaten anything i missed on the body when i'm finished clipping. Thinners are your best friend. I use Andis Ultra Edge clippers and Geib shears and thinners. They have a few that aren't too pricey for the home groomer (entrees and gators).
