It's cooked bones that we have to steer clear of. Raw bones are fine.

You said the bone was used to make soup. What was in the soup? Onions? Garlic? Bones are porous esp after cooking for long time in soup. the onion and garlic very likely seeped into the bone. Also ham is very salty.
