As to how your dog got the UTI? -- Same as people -- bacteria gets in the urethra and goes back up the urinary tract. Keeping a higher acidic pee can help deter bacteria growth. Higher meat content in their diet can help that. So, in that light, what you feed your dog can actually determine the potential for UTIs. Sometimes it is a matter of sanitary problem -- fecal matter getting in the urethra; but they can happen even if the dog is kept well cleaned.
I would keep taking your dog's temp today if you do not plan on taking him to the emergency after-hours vet. UTI's can go bad very quickly. Our tiny dogs can succumb to infections so quickly it is hard to believe. That is why I would seek a vet today and get anti-biotics started. |
