It really isn't that common and least with the breeders I know. What is usually done is when a dog/bitch has reached the age of retirement, they are spayed/nuetered and placed in pet homes for the cost of a spay/nueter and teeth cleaning. I'm pretty tight with my pedigrees, their lines were passed down to me and it's my responsibility to protect those lines to insure they don't end up in the hands of every BYBer.
