There are other alternatives.

You say it's only one spot in the kitchen. Can you trace where they are coming in? Usually, its through outlets/light switches or around the pipes under the sink. You can seal off these openings.

Ants also won't cross certain barriers. Borax is a common one, but it isn't safe around animals. You can use ground up chalk, Cinnamon or even cayenne pepper as alternatives.

If they are coming in through the windowsill, my grandmother used to put oil of citronella on a cotton ball and placed that inside a bottle cap on the sill. Worked every time.
