ok so this leads to my other questions...how many times do you attempt to show your "potential champion" before saying maybe he/she isn't the right material to be CH. I mean not everyone wins every time or fast to make it there...but what if you lose more than win on a particular dog? when is enough enough? |
Whew! Loaded question....but here it goes. And it goes back to the get go.
First obtain your yorkie from the best of the best....a dog that comes from a long line of Champions. I was taught in the beginning....make sure that there are at least 10 generations of Champions in a pedigree...including the sire and/or the dam. Go to the best of the best. But, have the pup evaluated by other experienced breeder/exhibitors/judges. I was informed that a good breeder will only sell you a show dog that they would have no hesitation in keeping in their kennel. After all it is there reputation in the ring.
Now I was also told that if you as a newbie have obtained a good dog......put it with a handler as a newbie you can ruin the dog for the ring.
Now, keep at mind the average age and that is average.....a dog begins winning is between 10 and 18 months of age (keeping in mind that it varies). Most of my dogs have been Championed by 14 to 16 months of age....With the exception of my Charmer, since I didn't bring him out until 2.
Now in answer to your question, if you're dragging a dog for over a year and not putting points on it...I'd have the dog reevaluated...it could be something you're doing wrong.....But, if that is not the case, you're wasting your money.....Now I've seen some exhibitors drag their dog around for over two years, have they Championed them, yeah!. But, you have to look at their competition and the shows they were shown at.
