According to the response I received from the TOTW vet, it is required by the FDA to use the preservative ethoxyquin in fish products on the ships prior to entering port. I did not think to ask if it was used as a preservative in other protien sources. I was also advised that the ethoxyquin is almost completely destroyed in the cooking process.
