When attempting to get the ears to stand you want take every bit of hair off. If you don't, when pulling that tape off, you are going to have that puppy screaming. Even when I'm trimming the upper 3rd of the ear, I take it all the way down.

Trimming down to the skin does not cause Leather ear. It is a fungus caused by moisture, that can be contracted even in the summer months too, especially if you live in high humidity areas. The best way to treat that is when you see traces of it beginning is to immediately rub with aldohol swabs and apply 2% lotrimon. You will never get back the hair growth like it should be.
