We have a fabricut outlet down the street and they sell remnants of 2-4 yard lengths with 60" widths in a an array of silks, satins, velvets, in numerous colors. So, I have several lengths of fabric in, white, cream, black, red, copper, pink. The 60" width is great to work with. I've also used bed sheets or blankets.
Also, my dh made a black box for me to use when I was taking pictures of my dresses for sale. He opened up a big cardboard box, cut off one end of it, and painted the interior with black spray paint. Now, I can pin dresses to the back of the box, have a black covered platform for the bottom of the box, for taking other pictures with the kids.
My favorite backdrop though is the outdoors, with my spring flowers, ribbon grasses or in the fall, with the brilliant colors of the changing leaves.
