I think your suggestions are good. A couple guesses on the behavior:

* He's knows he will get in trouble for pooping in the house, so he wants to hide it.
* He sees it as a toy, and is stashing it, the way he might with a bone. A lot of dogs play with their poop.

If he is not supposed to go in the house, then she needs to get serious about potty training. If he learns he should ALWAYS poop outside, problem solved.
