I agree. If my 14 year old Lady needed surgery I would definitely take her either to the vet school or the specialty hospital. They are much better equipped to deal with complications should they arise during surgery.
Has she has bloodwork done yet? That will tell your vet is she is even a candidate for surgery at her age.
