The bacteria Clostridium is suspected to be the main cause of HGE. That's why both Cali and CeCe were probably put on antibiotics.
Lady had three HGE attacks in four months so we explored different causes. Addison's Disease is one cause. In Lady's case, it seems her pancreas wasn't breaking down her food properly and undigested food was causing bacteria to build up in her intestinal tract. In diabetics like Lady or dogs prone to pancreatitis, this may be the cause. I switched Lady to a homecooked diet and added digestive enzymes and she's been fine ever since (knock wood).
