My dog was not a Yorkie, but he was a small breed. We had his anal glands cleaned at least once a year, more as he got older. You could always tell when they were bothering him, because he would rub his butt on the carpet. I've heard of people doing it themselves, but I would never have had the guts to do it.. our vet never really charged much for it, think it was like $20. I think it depends on the dog as to how often - once ever 6 weeks seems like it's too much to me, unless the dog shows symptoms of needing it done - however, I am no vet.
