I'm a firm believer in "if it's not broke, don't fix it". Anal glands should empty naturally when they poop. I have never had to do them/or have them done on any of my dogs. Occasionally noticing a smelly butt may not be reason to empty the glands. Your dog may have just pooped or been startled and expelled a little bit. Just rinse the butt and see if the smell persists. If your dog is dragging or biting at his/her butt you may have an issue but otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.
