I would guess they just fill it up and keep food in there always. Yours sounds like the type that likes to scarf down their food. I could be wrong. If he does that, take a small toy or ball and stick in the bowl so he can't eat so fast. When I first got Kaba she ate so quick she would get sick but one week with a small toy in her bowl she stopped doing that and now only eats a little at a time when she's hungry. But I don't free feed. I give her food twice a day (the recommended dose) and she picks at it all day when she feels like it. Very rarely will she eat the bowl dry.
