NEW Member with a NEW PUPPY! Hi!
I’m a new member and we just got our first Yorkie puppy, Mariah. We’ve had her for two weeks and she will be 10 weeks old this Sat.
We hadn’t planned on getting a new puppy but my 12 yr old daughter slept at her friend’s house. They had a new litter and she fell in love with one of the puppies. She was very persistent. She kept saying to us “you can’t help who you fall in love with and I’m in love with this puppy”.
I was so nervous to bring such a little puppy home but she is doing so great! We have her in our big bathroom off my bedroom with a gate up. We originally put her pee-pad near the door and her bed and kennel further in the room…but she would curl up pathetically next to the gate to sleep. As soon as we moved her bed and kennel closer to the door (so she could still see us) she started sleeping in them regularly. She actually goes all by herself into her kennel and sleeps in there sometimes.
We purposely have never gone in by her when she whines (we didn’t want to teach her to whine for our attention). After the first few nights she went to bed and slept so well. We “put her to bed” each night by turning on a nightlight for her, turning off all the big lights, giving her a cuddle and setting her on her bed…while we tell her it’s night-time. We rarely ever hear a peep from her! She always wakes up in the early hours…anywhere from 5:00 – 7:00 am and goes potty. Sometimes she whines for just a few seconds…almost to ask “is it time to get up yet?” and then goes right back to sleep again. She also does this if we get up to get a drink, etc. but it’s only for a few seconds. My husband works nights and he even sleeps in our bedroom during the day!
We have turned our bedroom into our new living room. We spend the majority of our time when we’re home hanging out there so we can spend as much time as possible with her/near her. We also let her loose in the bedroom when we can watch her closely. We may move her to the kitchen when she is older.
We have to train her to go on a pee-pad. We are at work/school all day and she is too young to crate all day long. We were so proud when we brought her home…we had her “room” all set up and she immediately sniffed all around and then walked to her pad and went pee on it! But since then it is definitely hit and miss. I would love any advice on how to get her trained to always go on the pee-pad. We didn’t put newspaper down and I’d be concerned about doing that as she will definitely chew it up! We had the pee-pad in one spot but she kept going consistently in another area (even though we had cleaned well there) so we added a second pee pad. She definitely seems to now pee consistently on both the pads but now she is also pooping near her bed and crate! I’m thinking about adding a 3rd pad where she is pooping. I thought if we could get her to consistently go on just the pads we could slowly inch the pads nearer to each other and then eventually she would be going on one pad! LOL! Anybody think this might work?
We trained our other dog to go on pee-pads until we felt she was old enough to be in a crate for a few hours at a time. Once we used a crate for her, she was potty trained in days. Now she is 7 yrs old and in a crate all day while we are at work/school. She doesn’t even have to go potty when we first let her out – she just wants attention.
Our other dog, a Bischon named Angel, is afraid of the puppy. If we let the puppy near Angel, she is like the energizer bunny and just runs and runs after Angel. So far Angel can jump up on the bed to get away. My only concern is that if she got cornered and had no place to run – I don’t know what she would do. Any tips on helping them to get to know each other would be appreciated!
I do have some questions. We give our Bischon Milkbone Small Dog Crunch Treats and Dingo’s as treats. Do you think that these would be ok for our new puppy too? I would appreciate any recommendations on good treats for her and good chew toys. I don’t want to give her anything that will make her sick.
This is our first experience with a Yorkie so any advice on our new puppy would be appreciated!
Sorry for the looong post. THANKS for all your help! |
