When we first brought Xena home we put her in a baby play pen at night in our bedroom so she could see us but didn't have free reign to make messes on the floor. She cried at first but stopped when she realized we weren't going to go get her. You just can't give in when they start crying, if you do they learn that crying will get them what they want. She would whimper in the middle of the night and we would take her out to go potty and then put her right back in the pen, no playing. She learned in a couple days that pen time was sleep time.
